Here is a warning to you all if any one you change your horses rugs in the field with no headcollers...I'm sure some of you do or have done in the past and trust your horse

I thought I did on Wednesday evening, went to swap my horse rug over in the field got to the last leg strap and it buggered off and kicked me straight bang in the face...I've just got out of hospital...I've lost 5 top teeth and have a cut on my face! Not nice..I was very very lucky to not of broken anyhing or any more damage but someone might not be so lucky so just to warn you all get someone to give you hand to hold your horse

Crikey! Glad you are okay!- I have to say your predicament makes your avatar somewhat amusing

Oh my god. I am so glad it was not worse. I DETEST leg straps. I take them off ALL my rugs and make one into a fillet string. I think they are dangerous to the horse TBH. I do put rugs on in the field without someone at the horses head, but with a fillet string it is so much easier. xx

after getting headbutted and losing my front teeth a couple of weeks ago, i feel your pain. i actually had tooth embedded in my lip.

ah well.. least you will get shiney new teeth!

hope you feel better... there are some plus points to drinking wine through a straw

Poor you!!!!

I quite agree and a speedy recovery.... 3 years ago I too was changing rugs without putting headcollars on and my mare spooked and stood on my foot and I ended up losing part of my middle two, it was skinned down to the bone and crushed the rest of my foot.

hope you recover soon, i don't use leg straps either. I do change rugs without head collars though and i suppose the samesort of thing could happen when reaching under to get the surcingles. Dear god, this horse thing is a bit dangerous, maybe we should take up crochet or knitting

Oh, I hope you are feeling better soon and get some lovely new gnashers. I am recovering from a pointless accident which was easily preventable too, I jumped on down the field to ride up to the yard and my boy decided to have a bucking fit and off the side I go. Broken collar bone, four months later and just recovering from surgery. In hindsight, stupid to do but easily done when you have complete trust. Guess we should always err on the edge of caution and remember that however well we think we know our horses we should always expect the unexpected. I think I've learnt my lesson. I hate straps too and just use a fillet string. xxx Big hugs xxx

Blimey thats awful. To loose teeth would be extremely distressing (though you are lucky it was not a serious head injury I guess).

Blimey.

I do change rugs in the field without tying up because mine are such donkeys in the field - Im also terrible for leaving stable doors opening and wandering off (they stay where they are put) etc so I certainly wont do now. Poor you

Feel better soon....

OMG poor you!!!

I have to admit I change rugs in the field as well, I'll take them off without a headcollar, but put them on with one (don't ask me why???!!).

OMG i do this all the time!! I have to admit I take one leg strap off tho and use one from side to side of the rug rather than cross them over...
