A friend of a friend had a mare and foal struck by lightning and killed just down the road from us in the thunderstorms the other night. So glad we rushed ours in, you forget how tradgic these things can be
See that is one GREAT thing about the new yard - no mains electric - YET!! And when it is installed, it WON'T be in the same building as the stables!!! I've always been to worried to bring mine in during storms for that reason - It has been hit before you see
Am terribly sorry for the loss of the friend of a friend's mare & foal
So are they safer in, or out? I always worry (well, I worry about pretty much everything) but I really don't know what's best in storms. Our American barn is very high up and could easily be struck, but there again the horses are high up too.
Oh no! That's awful, where were they? I mean in what kind of surroundings. My yearling is out, but the field isn't particularly high and there's plenty of high barns for the lightning to strike at. Oh god I'm worried now
*Wish I had horses at home*Wish I had horses at home*
Oh gosh, how awful, I hate to think about it. Poor horses.
There are actually no trees in the yearling's field, the tallest things are the thistles apart from a 6ft hedge covering two sides, with electric fencing at the other. Is this safe, or very unsafe? I'm not very clued up on lightning apart from the fact they strike trees
I remember we had a discussion about this in physics A-level 3 years ago.
Lightning is more attracted to points. For example a single person walking in an open field would be more likely to be struck than a huddled group of people, so having horses in a flat roofed shelter with nothing sticking out the top would be safer than having them out in a sparse field.
Send my love to the owners. I know someone whose friend's horse go hit the other week and died. He was gutted as he saw it happen and had it recorded on his phone
Oh bugger they don't have a shelter, they just use hedges.
There's no sign of storm, or even rain, as of yet. Touch wood, fingers crossed etc. I'll fetch him in tomorrow if it starts through the day. Hopefully it won't come tonight.
Thanks.
