(Also put in stolen) I just wanted to warn people.
I recieved a very upsetting email yesterday that people are theiving horses by marking them with a plait in their mane and transporting them to Ireland for a steal to order they are doing this from Holyhead port, apparently this port does NOT check if horses have passports! When horses reach Ireland if the theives find a microchip with the scanner they are dumped. Please please please take extra procaution, this is awful, just try and padlock fields and any access at all. Tack can be replaced but your beloved horses cant.

Yes thanks. There has been quite alot of posts like this recently.. Quite scary to think of our horses being stolen, but hopefully with the help of interent forums and such like we can all warn each other and be prepared.

x

Yes I know and it's really quite sad to think of what the owners and the horses must go through, it just annoys me, what sort of port doesn't check for passports??!! They're basically allowing it, the only advice we can give is check for plaits obviously and keep them secure. x

The only sensible thing you can do is to have your horses both freezemarked on their shoulder (so that it can be seen when ridden) and also microchipped to the new EU standard microchip which has just been introduced. Also register your horse with tha national horse register.

That way your horse can be identified as a freezemark can be read by anyone and a micro-chip can act as second line of defence.

If this was true do you not think the police/DEFRA would have cracked down on Holyhead port by now?
This is just like the 'two eastern european mean taking photos to steal to order' like last year.

Yes be vigilant but dont worry about every scam email you get!

i believe this is getting right out of hand now....

if anyone would care to actually take the time to find out the dire situation over in Ireland ATM as regards the economy of Equines there, then this hysteria just might abate.

there are literally THOUSANDS of Horses/Ponies in serious danger of starvation over there due to over population/lack of fodder/grazing.

the welfare problem is enormous.

so why on earth anyone would be stealing from Britain to take over to Ireland for what?...who are they going to sell them to?

no-one.

I am actually aware of this as most of my family live in Ireland, however there are a lot of dealers who are still selling to other country's, Im not stating facts that its just Ireland a lot of them are sure to be for the UK for thieves that wont buy their own horse, I dont doubt that!

Yes there is a police investigation about Holyhead port, I didnt think I would need to state this!
And in fact the "two eastern european men" were not pretend as they were in the south east where I live and there was a photograph of them and the van they were using, however they maybe different men (Im sure there are more than 2 eastern european men)

Lady-Bird. I can assure you that this reported theft was not a 'Spam E-mail'. The horse was stolen about three weeks ago and luckily recovered by the owner. To authenticate this theft please check the Horsewatch web site.

Also always take photos off your horses from the front, rear and both sides so that in the event of a theft you can also send photos out.

Interestingly, a friend of mine spoke to a police officer from Hampshire Horsewatch yesterday, and other than receiving the chain email, the police had not heard of the horse supposedly stolen from Guildford, and found in Holyhead - he could find no evidence verifying the story, but is continuing to investigate whether it is / isn't true.

Not to be pedantic but to quote from Hampshire Horsewatch's website [ QUOTE ]
This week a report was received

[/ QUOTE ], that makes it no more valid than the emails flying around and reports on a forum, in fact their 'report' could have been either of these. As JM07 said, the police have no information, therefore it's highly unlikely they're conducting any investigation at Holyhead.

The whole situation is ridiculous and more than likely based on chinese whispers as was last years. As I said before, you should always be vigilant but have a mind of your own when it comes to believing rumours.
Unless one of my horses turns up with this mystery plat in their mane my opinion won't change.

What type of horses are they after? am i right in thinking its mainly cobs rather than TBs as they cannot get much for a tb? i have both

the coblet is microchipped and so is the TB but none are freezmarked.
I suppose were wuite lucky as they are situated in the heart of the villiage down a little road with houses very close by and opposite the field gate

I do find this rather stange as the horse market in Ireland is very depressed at present to the point there is a 3 month waiting list for the meat man.
Why would the Irish want to steal cobs from England for sale over there when they breed some of the most sturdy cobs that come onto the market.
Please FACTS before FICTION, all is does is scare people more than necessary, when as horse owners we have enough to worry about
