Someone at the yard is helping out with one of the livery horses, who's been out of work and is a bit of a messed up ex racer. At the moment she's being lunged and long reined.

They asked me to sort out bridle which was twisted (maybe from their attempts to sort it?) and it had a martingale attached but with no neck strap which the owners had been using for lunging in. It was a short running martingale for a 16hh horse, but still i thought if she puts her head down and gets a leg over then that's a death trap. To be clear- the bit that attaches to the girth then went straight to reins, leaving a straight line with head up but loop with head down.

So i took it off and put it in the tack room and said if anyone has a problem with it send them my way.

But now i'm worrying as i'm new there (couple of weeks) and feel like i'm interfering a lot. But i can't stand to see numpties putting horses at risk.

Would you be annoyed if it was your yard/ horse? Should i speak to the horses owner when i see them and explain? or leave it alone?

They asked you to sort the bridle out and it sounds to me like thats what you've done and thats what i'd tell them if anyone says anything.

I agree

Is it a DIY yard? If it was my horse (it wouldnt be cause i am the one on our yard who helps everyone else) i would be annoyed if someone came onto the yard and interfered like that, however if you explain why you did it i am sure they would understand, you can tell them it was for the horses best interest (which it looks like it was!). Did the owner say that was ok to do, if not i would go tell the owner asap, cause there might be a reason for it having that dodgey tack. I know a woman on our yard has a device like that for schooling, they act as a cross between draw reins and a market harbourgh and it works well for her horse.

So i would go tell the owner or she may well get annoyed at you and think you were interfering, even though you were only trying to help the horse!

What laser said. Can i just ask without sounding bitchy, what is sombody doing lunging a horse if they cant even put a bridle right , sounds like they are very new to horses.

The owner wasn't there, tbh i have a low opinion of her horsey knowledge since until this week she has thought it's ok to leave horse in all day 24/7 no exercise and 1 meal a day...

The person with the horse today has been away from horses for several years until this week.

Horse looked to work nicely on lunge martingale free...

Will ask YO as they are advising on what to do with said horse.

It's a very small DIY.

I think you have done right, and in all my years of owning/working with horses, have never yet had to lunge with a martingale on

sidereins /pessoa etc yes,martingale No!

I would be grateful if someone helped my horse out like that. A neck strap is used with a martingale for the reason that it lies correctly once on the horse. It cannot serve its purpose if it does not do this and I would say in MHO that it was dangerous! x

No, they asked for your help. I'd tell them they need a new martingale, their's is broken and too small. They could pick up a cheap or second hand full size one easily enough.

I'm unsure. I think you did the right thing, however, there are certain things that I do/use for my horse because it works and it might not be the 'bhs' way but unfortunately I dont have a 'bhs' horse. If a friend of mine came to do something with him and didnt quite know how to fit something and asked for help, and said person then changed things, I would be fuming.

It was not a harbridge, it was an incomplete martingale running to the reins, not the bit.

I didn't do it because it was un BHS, i'm not actually a very bhs person, but she had been going mad in the arena for an hour and was stressing and sweating up, so i thought the less junk on her the better. also the reins were wrapped (loosely) and put through throat lash so i didn't really see how it would be a great help anyway.

I guess i will find out when i go up tomorrow... will have a chat with YO if i don't see owner herself.

Thanks for all the advice etc everyone
