I sold my 7 year old pony a fortnight ago as our stables and grazing had been taken back by its owners, and I had to down size. A lady who had been on our yard for over twenty years bought him as a field companion, shes a lovely lady and i knew he would have a great life with her.
I recieved a phone call last night from my friend who tells me shes had him put down as he kept escaping from the field during the night.
I am totally deluded in thinking this was totally uncalled for and secondly, was sort of vet would destroy and animal just because its owner is sick of it getting out of the field?
Im really gutted, and hurt I wasnt asked if i wanted him back, I would have been more than happy to refund them in full for the pony.

If it is true, what a terrible thing to have happened. She might well have had the knackerman out rather than a vet. I feel for you, but you did what you thought was best at the time.

What apears to have happened is!
Before the ponies were taken they cut the grass in the field as they said it was quite rough. The fence is also down in most places, so looking at the situation I cant really blame the pony for wanting to go find something to eat!

ring the lady using a different number, or ask someone else to ring them, or hide the number, i certainly would persist til i knew truth, whole truth and nothing but the truth. if its true, well, i think i would want to do something about it. she should have rung you with any problems before doing anything at all. end of. rant over. good luck and let us know.

Definitely ring her and find out what's happened, something could have got lost in "chinese whispers". If the pony has been PTS because it was escaping then that's really tragic

crikey, i so hope that isn't true. do you know anyone else who is a friend of hers? or can you just call her and ask if you can go and see him, face it head-on. will keep fingers crossed that it is just chinese whispers. sounds very drastic and totally bizarre, tbh.

He should never have been a field friend, he was a 12hh welsh pony who wasnt really a first pony as he was very cheeky and took advantage of situations although not evil or naughty in any way just cheeky. He would have been suited to a family with older more experienced children or even better being 13hh instead. My son is only 22 months old, I aquired him as an unsettled livery bill after 4 years at my yard. I wanted to keep him for my son, better the devil you know and all that, but when the yard at my house went back to the owners I had to move my horses and couldn't justify keeping him. I half heartedly advertised him, but didnt really try to sell him. When I was approached by this lady I jumped at the chance as he would stay fairly local and shes a real animal lover. Hence the sale. He should never have been a field friend, but as far as i was concerned he was going to a really nice home. I'm going to call at her house tommorow and ask where he is as he's still not in the field. I'm glad i didnt go yesterday as i dont think I could have controlled myself, but Im glad I put it to the forum its made me feel like I'm not over-reacting. Thanks guys, keep u posted.
