i hve a 5ft6 lightweight turnout which now leaks but is too good to simply replace. there is no where local to me who will do it for me, and it wud be a long trip to get it to my nearest place. i'm jst wondering about doing it myself, using the nikwax products. it wud fit in my machine as its only small.

has anyone used them before and are they as effective as sending it away to a pro??

I've used them when I've wanted to wash my rugs at the end of the year and they were very good. Certainly didn't leak after so I would say they're as good as sending to a pro.

there's 2 wash in ones. rug wash and rug proof. they both say they re-proof, but the wash ones cleans as well and the proof one says wash first. so do i need both? or can i jst use the rug wash alone?

I used the spray on one on all my rugs this year and its been great, no leaking. I found the spray that came with it was not very good and was quite time consuming so I used an electric spray gun instead - did the rug in a minute or so

do it in the bath, not your machine (unless you have one just for horsey stuff) as it really clogs up the workings - sort of coats it in a white silicon layer, very nasty and will eventually bu*ger up your machine.

The wash one doesn't proof - and may take some of the proofing off your rug.
Ideally you should wash it first, then proof it separately afterwards.

If you do it in your machine, clean out the soap dispenser thoroughly and use the Nikwax wash first, look at the temp recommendation on the rug, it will either be 30 or 40degree wash recommended. Then you will need to wash in the re-proofer on the same wash cycle. It will drip a lot when you bring it out of the machine so be ready with a towel. Hang to dry on its own outside if you can. Watch your clips and buckles as they will bang against the machine glass door and may damage it. When done run a hot wash through your machine to rinse it out of nikwax. Wouldnt recommend you do this too many times as it will ruin your machine and if the drum isnt big enough the rug wont have room to open and get an even coverage. Hope this helps.
