Hi everyone,

I've got an electrician coming in a couple of weeks to fit some lights in my stables before winter comes. He's also going to fit an electric shower in the wash box (we've already got the water and electric to it) so I'm just looking at ordering the shower and wondered if anyone had got one that they love and would recommend.

Thanks for your help.

My only experience of electric water heaters / showers is that unless they are in a heated room they freeze and irreparably break in winter. Unless there are ones out there that have some mechanism for keeping them at a temperature above freezing at all times.

I have read this but I've also been reassured that as long as we turn it off at the stop tap in freezing weather it'll be OK?

Mine was ok in the winter. I did remove all the hose connectors and stuff.
Mines a camping type one I think rather than the more expensive horse brands.
A lady I do some work for lost hers though due to freezing.
If you are worried you could get the kind on a trolley and just keep it indoors when it’s freezing cold.

One yard I was at had a covered and semi-enclosed wash box, and their handyman built an insulated cupboard around the wall mounted shower unit. He used taninised rough sawn timber planks to make the cupboard. This protected the shower from horses teeth etc, but also seemingly from the frost.

I’ve just got an electric shower from Wickes. It was the cheapest one they do. The unit is in my barn with the hose bit coming through the wall to the outside. I can’t use it if the pipes freeze (it’s blue pipe, laid 1m underground but the end where it’s joined to existing pipe is only just underground) but it’s usually fine by the evening. I’ve never disconnected anything, but I can push the hose back in the hole so it’s inside. It’s great not only for washing hands and ponies, but they also get warm feeds in the winter.

Thanks, that's really helpful 😊

We just have an ordinary domestic shower.
Works well and never had an issue with freezing up. (9 years old now and lived through Beast from the East). Just check if you have low water pressure and if so buy one suitable for that.

Which one do you have?
I need to get one too.
