I've just washed my horse's fleece in the washing machine. The pipe that expels water from the washing machine goes into pipe that expels water from the sink, and the place where they join is underneath the sink's U-bend.

While it was washing, large amounts of muddy water were coming up the sink pulghole, and I've spent the last half hour bailing out muddy water before it overflowed onto the floor.

Now the washing cycle has finished I still have a sink full of thick muddy water.

What can I do to sort this out before my OH gets home tonight (I'm not suppose to wash horse stuff in there!)

Will Mr Muscle sink unblocker cut through mud & hair? I've got to go out and buy it, so is there anything else I should get while I'm at the shop?

I cant advise but just wanted to say I totally sympathise and understand your keeness to get it all sorted so your OH doesnt know you have been washing the horse stuff! Hope someone can get you sorted out x

I've not yet managed to create a mess it can't unblock so def worth a go! Often it is the greasy gunk around the hair that keeps it jammed, rather than just a hair ball. While you're there I'd get another bottle - v handy to have around for 'whoops, I've blocked it again' moments!! I'd stick your washing machine on an empty boil wash too as that helps clear blocky scummy stuff too.

Yes, use that Mr Muscle stuff in the first instance, and once that's done put the machine on a really hot wash without anything in as well.

Is there a small door on the front of your washing machine, at the bottom.? With the trap/ filter in it.? When my washing machine doesn't clear properly it is nearly always something stuck there. I need something like a wrench to undo the cap behind the door but once cleaned then the water goes away. Normally find animal hair or colour wash trappers! Just do make sure you put plenty of towels on the floor first as there will some water coming out as well. Would try the mr muscle first to reduce the standing water, then clean out your filter. Good luck!!

I cant help you sorry but oh lord that made me laugh! I'm evidently not the only one who's o/h knows nothing of what the washing machine is expected to do- although my usual fear is "hurry up he's home soon and will hear the buckles clanging!)

A good idea to prevent hair etc from the rugs blocking the outlet pipe is to put the rug (or whatever) in a single duvet cover (which you have cut in half) tie a cord around the top to keep the rug inside. It should wash the rug without making a mess of your machine, works for dog bedding too.

LOL been there, have you taken the waste pipe from the washer out of place where it fits into the waste pipe ? The last time I did this hair had formed a ball where you push the washer waste into drain and blocked it .
Hope you get it sorted.

lmao this happened to me the other week. turns out the outside drain was blocked but after a bit of prodding about the drain was cleared! x i had to sit on the kitchen side bailing water out of the sink and out the window!! x

So go poke about with the outside drain where it whooshes out and should solve the problem!! x

My local launderette got wise to me sneaking in horse rugs, blankets etc and banned me, so I went out and bought a cheap second hand one, my dad plumbed it in for me in the garage and I use that.
I do know what your going through as when I was much much younger everytime I put stuff in mama's machine, I would end up deaf at the nagging I use to get. Hope you can get it shipshape before hubby comes home

Ditto this from experience. Actually if I do wash the animal stuff then I always put an empty very hot wash on with some bleach/disinfectant afterwards just to flush everything through.

Luckily for me though my husband has no idea how the washing machine works and doesn't go anywhere near it so he wouldn't know what I washed in there. I just have to be careful I don't leave dog/cat/horse hair on his pants and socks.:D

Good luck!

This is what I do :)
Also stops the buckles and clips wrecking your machine

I bought some industrial strength drain unblocker called One Stop, which the man told me was much stronger than Mr Muscle. So I put that down, waited 'til the standing water disappeared, then undid the u-bends and rinsed those out, then undid the washing machine filter thingy and checked that. I've got the machine on the empty boil wash, and I now just need to clean the kitchen which looks like a wet, muddy hair bomb exploded in there!

That'll teach me never to wash anything without using my wash bags again!

Thanks and I mean a great big thanks for brightening up a really miserable day, please do it again next week!!!!:D:):)

I also enjoyed reading this - thanks! On the subject of washing rugs - would you wash a heavyweight rug with a neck in a 9kg machine? I wash fleeces and lightweight rugs in it in one of those bags but think the heavyweight ones may break it and I would be in deep trouble.

Plunger!! Bit old fashioned but often works a treat!

Agree and caustic soda if you can get some just becareful of your fittings ie as its so corrosive.

Agree put hot wash on too.

If you ever do this again stick the horse wear into a pillow case with an elastic band tight on the tie off(at least hair will be contained)

Oh dear!

Merlin no it's not worth it i'm sure that would break it! Which will be a hell of alot more expensive than paying to send it to a rug wash company.

OP thankfully i've never had mud coming up, i'm so glad you've sorted it. I have however gone through that nail biting can I get it out and dry before mum gets home saga. I'm 26, pay rent and she's happy for my minging jods to go through but not my dehaired numnahs! I stock pile it until she goes away then do a few horsey loads and put my bits and stirrups in the dishwasher too!

Think you are right Ella it would be a nightmare if they broke the machine. I dream of having a washing machine large enough to do all horsey stuff! Like the tip re bits and stirrups in the dishwasher - must try that when OH is not around.

Been there, done that... got the.....new washing machine!

Everyone seems to have the right answers so hopefully you will be in the clear by the time your OH gets home.

Good luck xx

Invest in large zipped Horseware wash bag or similar
Helps stop hair blocking coin traps etc

Ditto this!

Works a treat. Simples.

Also you can get a product called "Vanish" which comes in a bright pink plastic tub, and you just add a scoopful of that into the washing machine drum. Its fab, takes out stains and dissolves a lot of the gunk etc.

Best way to wash fleeces, cotton summer sheets etc... Take one dirty rug, place in clean plastic dustbin, add water (cold is okay) add chosen washing solution (I use washing up liquid).
Then, place feet in (clean) pair of wellington boots and then get in dustbin and make like you are treading grapes (sorry but can't think of better description). Agitate rug in water until its really dirty. Drain and refill with water (and more washing solution) and keep repeating until water runs clean.
Then continue as before with clean water to rinse until soap suds disappear. Then squeeze rug and hang out to dry. Works every time and is really effective.

Oh, the only thing to remember is to do this outside :)
