I used to wash rugs at work but our machine broke and my o/h actually nearly has a breakdown if I put horsey stuff in our washing machine!
Im looking out for preferably a second hand one that I can put in the shed and use solely for horse stuff.
Q is what size drum do I need really, does anyone know?! I layer so don't actually have any really massive rug- the largest would be a 6'9 medium- I know this wont wash well in my machine which is a 5.5kg I think!

Anyone have any idea at all to my random question!
 
Not sure but I washed two a medium and lightweight 5ft9" in our extra large capacity bosch machine and didn't get results that I was happy with so I went to the country store in the end.
 
ooh I will watch this thread with interest as we are re doing our utility room and I was hoping to add an extra washing machine in for horsey stuff..
 
I've got a Samsung ecobubble 8kg load capacity and it wouldn't do a 6'9 medium. OK with a 6'9 lightweight. The top loader looks a good idea.
 
I used to use our ordinary washer for horsey stuff but OH got fed up of picking stray hairs off his shirts so we looked at getting a large capacity washer but they were so expensive.

We got a top loader similar to this one off Ebay for our rugs - our biggest rug is a very heavyweight 5'9" and I admit it takes a couple of washes to get it clean especially if it is very muddy but for me its fine. I think we got it for about 35 pounds.

Just one thing to bear in mind is that when we plumbed ours in OH had to get some adapters for the pipework as the machine was designed for the american market
 
I had a 10kg top loader which washed medium weight 6' 9" turnouts. Still have it actually, but no electric at the yard, and I was fed up with having it in the kitchen :D
 
I am BANNED from putting Shy stuff in the washing machine - he can always tell cos the white hairs come out into the drain outside, so I have to get every last one of them up :o
 
I thought I was really clever buying a american style top loader that do 8-9kg but you have the agitator in the middle so if you have a large rug you have to take it out and move it around.
I would go to the shops and have a look for the biggest drum size, do not just go on the recommended weight of washing as that is often to do with the concrete weights they use to stablelise it when it spins. Then from gumtree or facebook.The advantage of having a mashine is your rugs never really get very dirty, I wash them on a low tempreture with no detergent so you don't need soap and do not need reproofing.
 
I've got a large American Maytag on the yard for washing all my horse stuff. I have mainly Rambo Duos and PE Trios which are no problem in it. It is OK up to 6'9" medium weight rugs.

Get the biggest drum you can. Things wash better when they are not jammed in.
 
I'm most impressed by all the OH's who have any idea what's going on in the washing machine. I wash all manner of stuff in ours, horsey & doggy,and my most delicate items :rolleyes: but I confess the worst of it all are OH & son's farm overalls!! :eek:
 
I always used to wash my rugs in the machine but it doesn't do them any good and I can't remember how many washing machines I have been through over the last almost 30 years years of horse ownership. My machine I have now doesn't have the capacity for rugs but I wash my son's rugby team's kit so I am sure that won't do it any good either.:)
 
This is the beauty of having a pony in 4ft rugs :D

I always use the machine when the husband is out!

A friend washes her 6'6 rugs in a Dyson machine
