How many of you wash your light/medium weight stable rugs in your washing machines?, my weatherbeta lightweight needs a wash as its got a bit smelly but will it shrink?, in the past by the time I've needed to wash a stable rug its usually just been binned but I only bought it a month ago.

Will I damage the washing machine?, what setting could it put it on? my mum used to wash our miniature Shetlands stable/travel rugs in the washing machine but they were only ....miniature lol!

but Macks is 6'6 and if I break the WM my OH will kill me (he does all the washing/house work) an

d I only know how to turn it on *cringes with embarrassment*

So can I sneak in the wash when he's not in? will all my clothes smell horsey afterwards? how much washing powder do I put in?

I have a relatively thin 6'6" under rug that will fit in my washing machine. Just choose a cool wash cycle and it should be fine. I wash cotton sheets and things like fly rugs. If it is really grubby, wash it twice, or put the WM on a rinse cycle when you have finished.

Will it kill your WM ?, quite likely if you overload it. If you find yourself sitting on the floor with both feet on the WM door, trying to jam the rug in... it is a sure sign the rug is too big for your machine.

Use your local Laudrette, my OH fixes machines in a rug cleaning place and he always tells me that if you want to ruin your washing machine put a horses rug in it...
Some Laundrettes are funny about horses rugs so try and get as much hair off before you get there as possible

Yes I think I'll look for a launderette then, OH is very paticualar and always complains about horse hair..even the smell as it sets him off sneazing

so I think the WM might just be a bad idea!

I've put mine in as it is a big washing machine. Fitted a m/w weatherbeeta stable rug in. put it on at 30 degrees. I had to put the washing machine on for an extra rinse and spin afterwards though as there was a lot of hair..... although I had done a fleece, a fleece, a l/w stable then the m/w stable rug so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised at the loose hair!
They all came up nice and clean though

I wash mine in the machine - I always think my OH won't notice but the large amount of black hair blocking the filter is a bit of a give away. I try blaming the cat!

If you do take it to a Laundrette DO NOT let them put it in the dryer, that's what shrinks them.

I do my sweat sheets at home but the rest o to a laundrette who are very good at rugs. They have their own horses, which helps!

I have done....when OH well out of the way cos WM is his pride and joy ( strange bloke)...

I just put it on a 40degree wash with an extra rinse (inside a an old duvet cover to collect as many hairs/bits of hay as you can)...with 2 capsules..

You shouldnt break it cos its no more than a normal load...at least thats what I say to OH but still I wash them behind his back and dry them really quickly and get it back to yard before he notices!!!

If I went to the nearest laundrette with horse rugs I think they would have an absolute fit! They used to gross out when I took my dry clean only show jacket in with slobber all over, let alone a smelly poopy stable rug!

I have put a 7ft lw stable rug in my washing machine. I put it in an old duvet cover first, got as much of the hair off beforehand as I could.

I put the normal amount of powder in and put it on a normal wash at 40deg.

I've also put fleeces, numnahs etc in and it doesn't stink the wm out.

I think you can buy 'bags' as such to put things like that in that will keep the hair away from the wm.

So long as it isn't overloading the wm and you get as much hair off as possible, it should be ok.

My wm is over 5 yrs old and has had some hammering from horsey stuff as well as 8-10 loads of washing per week.

I put my thin ones in the washing machine in an old duvet cover so the hair doesn't clog up the machine. Wash at 30/40 degrees and make sure you use a non-biological washing powder and no fabric conditioner.

I do my horsey stuff in mine, then I put neat bleach in the machine, about the same amount as washing liquid, and then run it through on a quick wash. Seems to work a treat and the machine is sparkly clean and fresh afterwards.
