washing rugs

my horse ripped his rambo duo outer so it needs to be washed to go and be repaired has anyone washed their rugs in their washing machine? was going to do it at home rather than have to pay to have it done. What temp and will it need reproofing after?

I know people that do it at home but they have special bags to put their rug in as if you just stick the rug inside the washing machine all the hairs come off and can clog it up.

use a non-bio so not to wash the proofing out and you will need to put your machine on rinse a couple of times after to clean it.
or `sneak` in into your local laundry.

As someone who has recently broken their washing machine i would pay to have it done and save the price of a new machine, especially with a turnout rug

Rambo duos are designed to go into domestic machines (seperate load for liner). I wash my lightweight turnout in the machine with non-bio on 30 degrees. I've also reproofed it in my machine with nikwax.

I wouldn't wash them in my machine anymore. A friend broke hers with washing horse rugs in them...

Do you have a local laundrette near you? We have one in an industrial estate and they are very happy to do the horse rugs for us.

Up to 5ft 6 will go easily into a domestic washing machine. Any larger than that and it won't wash properly as it will be too jammed in. Having said that, I have successfully washed a 6ft turnout but it was a very lightweight one with no filling. And use RugWash to retain any waterproofing. It's around £9 a bottle but contains enough to wash about 6 rugs. Failing that, I know of someone locally who does a very good job on rugs. She charges £9 for a turnout.

I wash my lighter turnouts in my machine which I have had for five years. I wash rugs with hosepipe and a brush first to get the worst off, let them dry them put on a wool wash with Woolite and then on a rinse cycle a couple of times. Has to be a cold wash. I also turn the spin speed down to minimum for the rinses.

I take all 12 of mine to a launderette as they are too big for my m/c BUT if you have a breathable rug you MUST use a solution designed for Gortex or you may ruin your rug.

Go to a camping or outdoor shop and buy Tech-Wash or Nike-Wash. The label should tell you what temp. most of mine are 30 deg.

I wash rugs as my small business and only use top products as standard, i.e. nikwax & nuumed for the delicate items and expecially the itchy/scratchy skins. My machines easily do up 7ft rugs and with the wash and re-proof process the rug needs plenty of room to turn within the machine or you will not get even coverage of the re-proofer. Its definitely worth looking after rugs that we pay good money for. My Rambo Duo has just gone through its 3rd winter and is still like new.

I power wash mine put on metal gate and away i go might not be perfect but freshens them up.
