the time has come to wash my numnah... and i am almost sure i read on here that i should smother it in human hair conditioner... or was it fabric conditioner? or have i imagined it totally?

anyone have a good way to wash them in household washing machine? (is it going to kill my machine?>!?!)

I saw the conditioner post too - just haven't got around to trying it yet. I have special machine bags to wash hairy stuff in - they are great for saving the machine, just sometimes the numnah gets folded and not all the grease is taken out. I suppose washing it twice though is better than ruining the machine. I've got the bags for sale as part of my loading harness (www.soloequestrian.com) but I think Robinsons also do them (in bright orange).

I used to have the Numed sheepskin numnahs and I just used to wash them as normal 30 degree wash, powder and fabric conditioner. When I got them out of the washer I would rub my fingers through the sheepskin to fluff it up. Dont quote me on this though as I'd hate yours to shrink, go bald or something

Have had two for about 3 years now & just put them in ordinary wash (30 degrees) with no problems. Our saddler told me to use a velcro brush to get them fluffy again- works a treat.

I use non bio powder and fabric conditioner tescos own brand non bio powder is fab as normal bio powder can irritate your horses skin.
Its what you use to wash babies clothes in so kinder to the skin

You put the conditioner on BEFORE the wash?

I use the Numed washing liquid, and it does a good job, but I stillhave the problem of matting.

Yep - cover all the fluffy bit in conditioner BEFORE you put it in the wash - as I say cheap is fine Tesco's value is 30p a bottle - and then stick in machine on a wool wash with a liquid wool detergent. I have 2 Mattes sheepskin numnahs/half pad and they still look like new.

Yes the conditioner trick works really well. I smother it with something nice like Lenbor lol, then chuck it in the wash on it's own with normal washing powder.

Mine comes out not quite like new but pretty good.
