Washing Sheepskin

if they are properly filthy then I would gently rinse in cool water, then slather in cheap hair conditioner and wash with a non bio or wool detergent on a cool wash.

Well some sheepskin is machine washable so I put it through the machine on a 30
For sheepskin that isn't machine washable, I hand wash it with very mild handwash liquid in tepid water.
If it was very muddy I would let the mud dry out thoroughly - brush as much off as I could then wash it as above :D

I only use sheepskin numnahs, and machine wash them at 30 using a delicates/woollens/handwash liquid (used to use the proper horsey stuff but too expensive!). Either line dry or over the back of a chair in the house, and they all still look like new and are still soft and fluffy (and believe me, they don't come back from fun rides like that  :D).
