What is the best way to wash competition jodhpurs/breeches?

I swear its always a win/lose situation when washing white breeches:

You can either have them on a very high heat wash every time and remove all stains and make them white. But, they then are "washed out" very quickly and loose their quality massivley.

Or have them on a colder wash to try and save their condition, but still come out of the washing machine with stains on them and greyish in colour.

I also have used "back to white" washing powder you add into the wash, but surley this has somekind of bleaching action and must be no good for the breeches condition in the long run.

My breeches I brought in april are alreay dead, they are grey and very over-washed and even the stitching in the pockets has seemed to of dissolved away.

But I know there is a way of keeping them in good condition and white and stain free, because many of my firend's 2 year-old breeches look better than mine after their first month!!

I mean it wasnt too bad when I brought the £15 soft and stretchey jods from the local tack shop. But a nice pair of comp breeches are normally £100-£200 sometimes more!!!

Do you wash by hand or in machine?
Any tips would be much appreciated!:D

Exactly the same as mulledwhine - Have a pair of Pikeurs now 12 years old in good nick although not used much these days.

Also dry on line or airer no tumble drier

Also agree with MulledWhine. My OH plays tennis competitively so his whites, my breeches and saddle pads and bandages have always stayed white thanks to Vanish spray and powder. I also like the Ariel powder with added whitener which really keeps them properly white even when they haven't got any stains, it keeps them looking new.

Also I don't use fabric softener on any breeches with a full seat as it really affects how they look and feel.

Eatching this thread with interest.
My OH plays cricket and he can never get the grass stains from the trousers!!
Also my white numnah is looking a little less than white.......
Will try some vanish and give it a whirl
