Washing wool/half wool numnahs?

Just washed my half wool numnah and my machine just wont spin it properly, tried it in a wash bag and not in a bag. Each time it just comes out absolutely drenched, ever after another spin. It says unbalanced load, which I am assuming is down to the weight of the wool when wet?

How does everyone else wash their wool numnahs?

I am tempted to get a saddle rack and hand wash it in the bath then leave to dry on the rack, but wondered if anyone has any better ideas?

PS washing machine washes everything else fine and is pretty new/modern.

put some other wet items in to spin with it, balance the load.

I think it might because it’s heavy and one item try putting a old big towel in with it and try again

With heavy sweaters, that cant go in the machine, I get out two dry towels. Lay one out flat, lay the wet garment on top and put the other towel over. Then roll up tightly. Most of the water goes into the towels.
But I tend to handwash wool with woolite or persil silk or wool.

Our local rugwash does numnahs and saddle cloths for a very reasonable price. Much better than getting your own filter clogged up with horse gunge ? eta mine are the half wool ones and they came back looking like new

I just gave up washing them and went to a half pad on top of a cloth. I love wool in contact with the horses back but it was just too much trouble between failing to spin dry and shedding vast quantities of trapped hair.

This is why I love top loading washing machines they are much better at washing heavy loads.

Does your machine have different spin speeds, i put mine at the slowest which is enough to get rid of enough excess water to let it finish drying on a rack.

I had this problem and just popped a heavy towelling bath mat in with my numnahs that wouldnt spin by themselves. It balances the load.

I find it’s better to wash two together. Or just rearrange it in the machine and try again. Sometimes takes 2-3 attempts.
