I have a nice horse who has been a quirky boy but has now settled and is progressing really well. I have been having lessons with 2 different trainers both of which have said the horse has more than enough talent for PSG and above which is so nice to hear however, I am not sure that my ability will allow the horse to progress this far. My question is would you stick it out and see how far you can train together or would you pay a pro to ride the horse to its ability?

He would not be for sale, I have gone through to much with him and he is my horse of a lifetime.

I think out of all the disciplines dressage is the one you can work your way up in on a talented horse and learn along the way as you do not get issues of really cocking it up if you are worried/not brave enough.

I think if you do decide you want to move up then sending the horse to a trainer to help teach new movements and you going for schoolmaster lessons will mean you do not confuse communication issues where you are asking and have not quite got the feel yet.

I would just enjoy my horse if I were you...I guarantee he will not be sat in his stable going I am so wasted with her I should be doing PSG

he is more likely to be thinking food, poop, itch, food ect

Absolutely not!

If he's your horse of a lifetime, then I'd just keep going as you are, having fun and doin what you want to do. He is completely incapable of realising what his potential may or may not be and as long as he's fed, watered, cared for and having fun with you will be happy.

100% agree with that!
There is no such thing as wasted with present rider. You should always buy the best you can afford and enjoy it.

If he is your horse of a lifetime, enjoy him, progress with him, have a trainer to help him learn things so when you are learning he will know what you want and remember, we are supposed to enjoy this hobby, sport, obsession.
And I agree, he has no idea he was destined for stardom, go have fun.

I am in agreement with everyone else.

I have a professional rider who events my horse, but I do compete her at dressage. My trainer tells me she could go as far as PSG but I have no intention of getting anyone else to do that, she and I will go as far as we can provided we both enjoy it!

Even the pro's had to do it for the first time once, so keep your horse do what you can, learn from each other and put the money you would pay a pro into more help for yourself.

Good luck with him.

Horses dont have ambitions - he wont know he has PSG potential

So go and enjoy him for as much as you want from him and see how far you can both go together

It will be far more satisfying, especially as you have put so much work into him already

It sounds as though you will have a great time moving up the levels and learning with your horse - just take things at your own pace, and don't feel intimidated!

I agree 100% with M_G - and very well put!
In my mind there is no such thing as 'wasting' a horse if the horse is happy and you are enjoying it.
However, if you WANT to see the horse perform to it's full potential that's another thing entirely. There's nothing to stop you still riding the horse and learning whilst getting a pro to ride it at a higher level, if that's what you want.

Therefore it's up to you.
