I am spitting nails bolts of fire  I have three big horses and they have the big stubbs water buckets. We have no water on the yard at the moment due to the freezing conditions. So I have the big 6 water porters to bring from home each day. From the experience of the last big freeze I know this is normally more than enough. The smallest and oddly the nearest to the others have an empty bucket this morning and a very wet floor so I thought may be she had knocked it. But this evening it was empty again! Some VERY lazy so and so has been helping them selves to my hard worked water from home. Queue one very unhappy person.

Put notes up on the doors saying you are adding medication to the water which would have a severe diuretic effect on a healthy animal so no one is to help themselves! And also, by putting a massive note up, will make people look twice at someone else helping themselves.

I would be massively peed off too if my own horse was then left dry due to someone elses behaviour..

What a great idea especially as the lazy so and so paid another visit last night. Might just start a by telling yard gossip that my horse is on water added meds and hope that who ever has been pinching her water for there horse/pony does not get the runs! Wish I could catch the person as I think it is the same person who lobbed a bucket of water out of her tack room last night which of cause has frozen to and ice rink this morning. This is the same lazy person who lives the closest and leave bucket and dustbins of droppings outside her stable for days at a time. I am thinking about getting one of those CCTV movement activated cameras to see if I can catch the person. Yard owner is aware but has said she needs to see it happen can't go on assumption as I might have wrongly identified the culprit.

Stick some harmless food colouring in it, bright pink water might make them think twice, or at least will identify who is taking it.

yard I was on couple of years ago had frozen taps/pipes one winter. One of the other liveries (6 liveries on yard) and me lugged enough water containers on Christmas day for all horses to have enough to drink. None others brought water that day, so was a LITTLE p*ssed off to find one of the others using the water to wash out her feed buckets and then complaining her horse didn't have enough water to drink!

I would be really pissed off, water is the hard thing to bring up too as in heavy and time consuming to fill, all that for someone else to use it and leave your horse without.

The food colouring is a great idea though...

After my carefully filled and stored bin of water got used the first day the taps froze and not re filled, it now bears the label, 'i filled this for my lot - get your own - it was wet and heavy and I did not do it for your horse. The tap by the house works as you know from last year.' worked so far.

great idea.

we do not have that problem, hubby made the builders put in two high taps above the human low taps in the common room so when the freeze happens the hose connects to it and we can still water the horses and I use my sledge to drag to stables.

Small gas bottle and blow torch attached. Defrost the tap yourself and job done.
Or get an old wardrobe or cabinet off freecycle and lock the water butts away!
