Water in stable - problem stallion.........

One of the stallions smashed his automatic water drinker off the wall and flooded his and the adjoining stable completely. He kicks over water buckets as soon as you put them down. We have tried one of the flat backed buckets hooked onto the wall, but he managed to destroy it. In the field he has managed to pull the very heavy trough over more than once. He just cannot resist playing with water, but doesn't seem to realise he needs to have some to drink to survive! Has anyone else had this problem, and do you have any suggestions to solve it? Thanks!
 
Well, if it is a solid built stable (ie concrete floor and brick/blocks) you could build a breezeblock 'trough' in the corner big enough to take a water bucket but, say, four blocks high - so he can get his head in it but the bucket sits well down inside. He might be able to get the bucket out, but probably not until it is empty. You could also set bars across the top to stop him being able to remove the bucket.

You have my sympathy, my new lad has developed a thing for playing with the float in the field trough, he likes the noise the water makes when it whooshes through the valve. I dread to think what he will be like with a bucket....
 
Over the years i've had a few of my liveries horses pull the water feeders off the walls!

What i now do is, the stables which have the feeders on the back wall, directly opposite the door (80% of the time it was these they pulled off) i now put one of the corner manager feeder brackets just above the water feeder, this way, they can drink, but if the rub etc, they rub onto the bracket rather than feeder. Obviously the feeder needs to be more in the corner of the stable for this to work but its worked for us for a few years now.

i've fixed 2 of those 'big spring-hooks on a 4-screw plate' things low down on a wall, and if i have a yob in the stable i put a big solid plastic bucket (the ones that hold nearly 2 normal bucketsful, very strong Stubbs ones) in a just-larger soft thick black rubber bucket (for insulation and traction!) and clip the plastic bucket to the wall, and fill. has worked like a dream so far...
