So we’ve recently moved and have baths in the fields for the horses water supply. My 2 year old has taken a liking to water and keeps plonking her feet in it! She seems to like splashing about but it’s causing issues because a) the water gets filthy b) she’s tipped the baths a few times and i could do without this in this heat! And c) she could potentially hurt herself.

Any ideas of what I can use instead? Something deep ideally so she can’t get her legs in, I’ve looked on marketplace for troughs but they are all cattle feeder types that aren’t deep enough. I don’t mind something big as it would take less filling, at the minute I’m filling the baths 3/4 times a day and it’s not ideal.

I do have huge trug buckets in there too but she prefers the blooming bath 🤣 wouldn’t mind but she hates the hose pipe! I don’t mind her playing in it, I just feel bad for the others drinking dirty water and the potential hazard of her hurting herself

You could try large barrels. They’re less inclined to climb into a narrower deep water vessel, but can access the deep water to drink from.

We got some grey large barrels, 4.5ft high, we cut off the top part that curved in so it was the full @60cm diameter opening…easier to drink from/clean etc. sanded down the cut edge. Put in a massive heavy 15kg stone at the bottom to stop the gelding tipping it over. Probably holds 160ltrs.

These were extra large barrels, from the uk, we brought with us. A free-ad secondhand advert iirc. Farmers might have them to sell on. Lots of smaller barrels for sale, but these large ones are fab. So easy to clean too.

Would your horse get into the bath if you raised it off the ground onto blocks, and maybe screwed the bath down to hold it in place, if you build a firm block wall base for it to go on?

I also have one who likes to dip her feet in the water, it's very annoying for all the reasons you said! Our trough is an old bath, if i had the energy i would build a base for it and set it higher.
I also have a green dustbin by the gate as an alternative, which generally stays upright.

I have a raised old butlers sink near the stables which works and looks good, but if you found a old freestanding bath 🛁 that would be high enough and heavy enough, big enough - and the plug makes it easy to empty and clean!

edited to add : just read your original post to see you already have baths!

we use human baths. They are built in with stone, concrete block etc. They don't move and the top of the bath is around my waist height (I am 5'8") That is just the right height for them to drink but no way can they get their feet in. That is also the height for the small semi ferals. Plug in the bottom and just pull it to drain and clean. We have dug in alkathene so no water carrying. Some have ball valves so easy peasy. We do however have one head dipper and trough emptier. He likes a nice deep trough. Unfortunately he also likes ball valves especially the ones he has pulled off in his teeth and can run around the field with so his trough just has a tap.

just the same as what farmers do for cattle except you can pick up human baths pretty cheaply and they are easy to clean.

Things like trugs and barrels don't work. These "head splashers" like a large surface area to really get their heads into.

Not what you asked for but we use the biggest sized trugs, because we have one who plays in the water. That way she isn't spilling/spoiling all the water.
I use these several of them in a row so if one gets tipped there are others left, they do need to be tied to the fence.

Large plastic loft water storage tanks, with any low-down holes suitably permanently plugged with araldite/epoxy/GRP.

I have two of these, round ones that came without any pre-drilled holes. They even survive a good kicking from the head splasher! The only problem with is that algae seems to grow on the insides quite quickly and the water gets hot when the weather does. Solved both though moving them into our shelter.
