Any one use one?
I'm hopefully going to hunt Hattie next season, since she can't have a foal and I now work for a hunt yard. But I am pretty sure I won't have enough control in the straight bar pelham.
So was thinking about the cheltenham gag. Hattie only likes straight bars or waterford mouth pieces.
Any other suggestions welcome. She tends to lock her neck and go, she doesn't put her head up, more down.

i had the same problem, took my cob hunting for the first time she can be quite strong ,she was in a straight bar pelham, but i changed her bit to a cheltnam gag she also doesnt like jointed bits, and i didnt have any breaks or any control at all it was very scarey, she sound a lot like yours she puts her head down not up and sets her neck, then found out i was better off in the pelham with curb and two reins.

I have tried various things with pickle, he was incredibly strong and like yours only seemed to settle with a waterford mouthpiece, I now have him in a neule schule universal and a grackle noseband and for the first time ever have proper control!

I have tried:

waterford pelham
waterford continental gag
loose ring waterford
french link
Dr cooks bitless bridle
kimblewick

How about a Waterford Nelson Gag? I know someone that had great sucess with this on their cob

I've used a Balding Gag (rather than Cheltenham) and I did find it a bit much for my old loan horse - eventually he went best in a full cheek waterford.

Wouldn't be me would it! As I have!
It is the only thing I have control in & feel safe! Had tried various other bits Dexter racing, all gags but the nelson waterford (to aid steering as well as breaks!)

I use to reins & he now knows I have upper hand & so I am usually on the snaffle rein but have back up should I need it!

Well hope her's doesn't break like mine did!

Thanks all.

Is the Nelson gag the one with cheeks?
I think I will try to borrow one so I can see what she thinks. Try to do some fast things in a group to test it out.

Thanks. She's in a pelham with 2 reins and curb at the moment. I do think she sets herself against the straight bar. Thats why I was thinking a waterford mouthpiece. I could try a waterford pelham.
