Am looking for a stronger bit for pickle, for hacking him in. He only accepts a waterford mouthpiece and gets very irritated and upset by anything else. I currently have a loose ring which he works well in for flatwork and jumping, and was riding him in a waterford dutch gag until he got used to it therefore it stopped having an effect. I want something I can switch around with the dutch gag one so he doesnt get used to anything? Any ideas?

What about giving him a break from the waterford, i change bits regular, he learns to lean on the waterford, so change to lozenges and then back to the waterford. I would say, save your money get a cheap lozenge style snaffle for school work and use the gag for hacking still

He doesnt lean on the waterford to get away anymore! he learnt he couldnt do that anymore, he has now taken to just throwing his head around so much he is unholdable!

as I go bigger with waterfords!

What about a waterford but in the form of a true gag like the Cheltenham? You could ride with two reins and only implement the gag rein when needed. The thing about the waterford is that he should not be able to "grab" hold of it as it will collapse. I am thinking along these lines with my Fly. They are expensive but they do raise the head and discourage the leaning which my horse is prone to. Good luck, I know what a nightmare bitting is! xx
