I was advised to buy a waterford snaffle as my lad leans on my hands and has a tendancy to grab the bit and tank off.

I have heard that you cannot get your horse in an outline when schooling in a waterford. Is that true?
 
definately not true, works wonders for mine when she needs a little reminder about coming round and not leaning on the bit.

I wouldn't use it all the time though - put it in for a couple of days then switch back to a less harsh bit. They serve a purpose but don't overdo it.
 
Ideal for this problem - but as for 'getting your horse in an outline' - the horse forms it's own outline based on the power generated behind and the strength within the horse - from that point of view the bit might as well be a piece of cotton for all the relevance of the bit.

I agree. As long as the horse is working forward into a consistant elastic contact then as long as the bit is comfortable it doesnt matter what it is. although IMO less is more

Unless your adviser was referring to the fact that some bits encourage a horse to drop/round its head. but that is a false outline and not correct at all. A waterford wont do that but you wouldnt (shouldnt) want that anyway!

She listens to it and seemed MUCH happier in it.

Ditto everyone - it shouldn't affect the horses outline
