Our big hunter mare is strong and tends to lean, and she goes best in a waterford....when we bought her, her previous owner had the rubber bit rings/doughnuts on, so we have left those on her. I've always had french links etc on my two, and never used the rubber bit rings, but was wondering if they are there for a particular reason?
I only ask because she can be a little headshy at times, which is improving with time, but for my reasonably novice OH, it can be tricky to get her bit in, with the rubber bits either side, and get her bridle over her head, all at the same time, bacause the bl**dy things just keep sliding in to the middle of the bit! In fact I find it tricky at times, so no wonder he is struggling!
So really what I'm asking is, do we really need those on or could we try without? Don't want to cause her any harm but it would deffo be easier not to have them on!

They are there so that the loose ring doesn't pinch her mouth. You could try and see how she goes without them. Good luck getting them off

Yeah, I figured that was why they were there, but I have loose ring snaffles on both my 2 and never had a problem with pinching? Maybe will take them off and give it a try!

The Waterford is supposed to be 1/2" bigger than a normal bit, but you can purchase PINCHLESS bits now. Trawl the WWW, there's a great site called Shop4bits who I have always found to be very reasonably priced and great service. Good luck.

Well I had bit rings on because I found pickle could kind of pull the bit into his mouth!(hard to explain) the rubber bit rings sorted this, that could be why she has them??

I have found an easy way to get them on a off now though, get two bits of bailer twine/strong string, thread it through the bit ring, then get one person to hold one side one the other and PULL the someone else puts the bit in works a treat!
