One of my colleagues at work has her horses at a private yard. They have automatic drinkers but there has been a leak in the supply pipe and for the last 4 weeks or so there has been no water. YO has been very good at filling up large container with water but the horses don't all have their own bucket which they can drink from whenever they like and have to wait on being watered by the staff. From what my colleague says they can go for most of the day with no water and then be allowed to drink two or three of those large tub-trugs full of water all at once until satisfied. Am I overreacting by thinking that this is slightly cruel and it would be better to put a bucket in each stable and fill it throughout the day? Apparently a lot of them kick their buckets over as they're not used to having them but it can't be good to be starved of water then allowed so much at once can it?

I wouldn't go asd far as to say 'cruel' but if it were my horse, I would prefer him to have buckets so that he was able to drink when he wanted. I know this is an inconvenience but perhaps the owners could lend a hand where possible?

Fingers crossed it will be fixed soon.

WOuldn't be happy - little and often is much better. As she is obviously paying a premium to be at this 'private' yard (I take that to mean its relatively posh etc etc.. !) the YO should be able to either

a) Get the ruddy pipe fixed - its wasting the YO's money so you would think it would be in her interest too to get on the water company
b) Be willing to give horses 24 hour access - if they go galloping around etc they shouldn't have to wait maybe hours for water.

There is this simple thing called a 'tyre' that I have found effective for horses who enjoy kicking over buckets. Or 'wall clips'.

Sounds very bizarre, why doesn't your friend just put a bucket in the stable herself until the water is fixed?

Wouldn't do that with my horse.

Agree, my fill livery didnt supply water buckets.
