As the title says really, I'm desperately looking for a jacket that does what it says. The one I bought last year decided, today to show me that it is no longer waterproof. The only part of me which stayed dry was my hair, so I suppose at least the hood is still doing the job. I need something which will keep me warm and dry doing ponies and walking the dogs, preferably with a 2-way zip and with lots of pockets, which isn't going to cost the earth. I'm prepared to pay a decent amount for something recommended by the people who do the same tasks as I do in the same yukky weather. Over to you lovely lot.:)

Flexothane! They do a Winter jacket, it has a thin fleece lining which is removable, so it's great for layering and has proven to be totally waterproof thus far. Put the name into Google, you'll get many positive reviews. They do over trousers too.

Have you had a look on discount outdoor sites like sportsshoes.com or sportpursuit.com. They often have really good makes with brilliant discounts. Goretex based stuff rules!

Hi, the Waterproof jacket nerd here.
For the vilest of days, I have my Mountain Horse Adventure parka, two sizes too big, so it covers my knees. Waterproof to 5000mm. Very breathable. Like wearing a sleeping bag with arms. Not sure still available, but the serious Mountain Horse winter coats are good quality and seem designed for hacking through the Rockies in snow storms.

For less vile days, I have a waterproof raincoat with no fill; Just bought a B Vertigo Abigail, waterproof to 3000mm after my Horze Jadine jacket got old and started letting water in.
Some jackets go up to 10,000mm waterproofness. You also might want to decide if you want quilting or fill or just the shell. Taped seams are the go. I like the little extended hand-covers with thumb-holes, and you want a hood that's big enough to go over a riding hat or woolie hat, and maybe a split at the back to cover saddle.

I found this useful. It tests a few and explains the waterproofness system.

ps: someone posted a few weeks ago about a disappointing experience with equetec so maybe check that out. Good luck.
pps; down here in NOT SUNNY Sth Australia, we're suffering through La Nina weather system #3 ... so every two days since late May its been freezing thunderstorms and cyclonic fronts. Last weekend saw power out across the state. Luckily not the awful floods of NSW and Victoria, but still grim and constant. Its definitely all down to global warming, and its bloody terrifying.

Equidry might not look attractive but they’re warm and mine is waterproof after a years heavy use. You need at least 10,000 whatever l’ve also a Stierna?? which is 20,000 not had as much use yet but the water bobbles off so worth a look or try mens jackets on sports direct they usually have expensive gortex at reasonable prices, sometimes ladies but usually the sizes are very small.

All I would say is that unless you're looking at a very specific named brand that's been well recommended (like Equidry), don't bother with equestrian branded stuff. Instead look for good quality mountain walking jackets in sales. You can get a much better product that way, and you're not paying the premium that comes with equestrian branding. My mountain equipment jacket is still going strong after years of use, and that has a two way zip and a big hood to fit over a climbing helmet (or my woolly hat).

Mountain Horse Alicia! I honestly think it's the perfect coat. Warm, waterproof, two way zip, leg straps, poppers so it sits over a cantle, not a ginormous sack, not crazy expensive, a proper deep hood. I just love mine, I've never been so pleased with a coat
