Just got back from a holiday in Europe; ten days of walking in shorts and a vest (bliss) and now back in Yorkshire it's blowing a gale and peeing with rain.

I'm already sick of being wet (did I mention I hate our winters with a deep and abiding passion?) so have finally decided to abandon any effort to appear a normal member of society, and get one of those Aussie cowboy hats.

Can anyone recommend a particular make? Definitely doesn't have to be a horsey brand, and unisex / mens are also fine. It just needs to have a wide brim and be good and solid and waterproof! I have a small (56cm) oval shaped head, although I don't know if shape makes any difference. It'll need to be tight to stay on in the wind.

Thanks in advance,

I bought mine on ebay for about 20 quid and I just spray it regularly with water proof spray it's great in the rain never leaked.

I have a very small head and even the smallest size was massive but I just bought some hat minimising foam and stuck it on the inside, it fits perfectly now and stays on in the wind so it's a thumbs up all round for them from me.

Ours are both Toggi, so Ebay may be good place to start.

I have a toggi one, it's brilliant, but it's really old and I've no idea if they still do them. I've had it years and worn it to death but I've been called Crocodile Dundee by multiple strangers for wearing it round here except to the yard *big sigh*.

ETA They do still sell it. I can't figure out links anymore but it's on Amazon: Toggi Women's Monroe Wax Cloche Hat

Ha! That's what I was worried about....but frankly my dislike of getting wet has finally outweighed any remaining fear of being mistaken for an eccentric wild beast hunter.

Agreeing with M. BARMAH are brilliant, they come with a bag and pack into it easily so it just stores in a coat pocket when not in use, mine and my daughters are over 10 years old used all the time when it rains (and strangely on very sunny days to give protection from the sun). Buy one, it will last you a lifetime, excellent value for money. (Barmah foldaway Bronco £50 at www.uttings.co.uk)

Mine was purchased at a show many years ago. It still has hair on. I bought it a hat stretcher for those times it gets really wet so that I know it will be the correct size when it has dried, it would shrink and be a bit tight on first wear again otherwise.

Akubra are the hat cousin of R.M.Williams boots in Aus.

In some parts damaging your partners 'best' (because you own a work and sunday best hat) Akubra would be grounds for divorce... 😂

They are very good quality and will last, though not cheap and don't know about waterproof.

This is what I should have done with mine! It used to fit beautifully, but now it's a bit too tight, and as a chronic headache sufferer, I can't wear it long enough to stretch it :(

It's a Barmah foldaway one, and was absolutely wonderful when I could use it.

this is not going too be helpful (sorry!) but I have a wonderful waterproof hat of the type. Not only that but you can scrunch it up and put it in a pocket and when you get it out it just goes back to normal! I got it in Bridport in Dorset many years ago and a shop that only sold HATS!!! It was a brilliant little shop and you could be in there for hours looking round. Could well be a Barmah as Unicorn says above as it foldaway! I still love it 25 years later.

oh wait,.....AND IT"S STILL OPEN! https://snooksthehatters.co.uk/

Phone them up. they may well have exactly what you need. With a bit of measuring you'll be off!!
