Waterproof riding trousers

I have some of the Musto waterproof full chaps (insulated ones). Obviously if you're wearing a short coat you have a tendency to get a wet bum but then they don't cover your bum some can't blame the trousers. But otherwise I love them. Really warm - in fact I never want to take them off and very naughtily walk through knee deep mud in the field in them. Obvioucly results in seriously dirty chaps. However, they wash really well when they have got muddy. And yes no issues with leakage - although I give them a once over with a Fabsil spray every now and again as they're washed quite a lot and that can affect how waterproof things are.

Only problem is the price but I bought mine second hand from a friend for £20.

It's a waterproofing spray. I bought it from an outdoors/camping shop - quite a tall blue bottle. Wonderful stuff - I use it on coats, hats, chaps etc.

I can't recommend Musto waterproof chaps enough, mine are approaching ten years old and still look like new, and are completely waterproof, no leaking at all. They wash in the machine really well and are extremely warm... need I go on?!

After freezing my thighs off, I bit the bullet and bought fleece-lined water-resistant Pikeur breeches. SO SO happy. My legs are warm and dry, and I don't feel inhibited by them while riding.

Actually if you're wearing a short coat, it is natural to get wet bum but then they don't cover your bum some can't blame the trousers. Otherwise they are useful.

I've gotta pair of "water resistent" breeches, got 'em for £30 (normal price £60+) from a local equestrian event. The make is "HKM" www.hkm.sportsequipment.eu and the saddlery stallholder I bought them from is www.hopevalleysaddlery.co.uk. They're absolutely fab - really comfy and the rain just forms in little droplets on them! I haven't seen any Pikeur waterproof breeches, they sound super tho' and if they do the job would be well worth the price.

I think there is a definite gap in the market here (designers/retailers are you listening?) - I don't think I'm the only one who hates getting a wet bottie and freezing cold legs. If you're riding a nappy horse in a force 10 gale, the last thing you want is to be stuck up there in the cold and your legs get cold and then basically you just get cold and fatigued and then think oh well stuff this, BUT if you're nice and warm its a different story.

What is needed is well-designed, well cut breeches/joddies which are suitable for formal riding such as hunting as well as being in sensible dark colours for happy hacking/endurance etc.

My other grouse is that if you're short and dumpy with diddy little legs like I've got, then its almost impossible to find either waterproof trousers or chaps that are the right length.

I have a set of Rambo chaps, they are not fleece lined but think they are the best £30 I ever spent!!! Our horses are in a big open field and I can spend all day down there in the rain an it doesnt bother me at all (cold feet are always the problem I suffer with).

I've lent them to my mum when she's been out with the dog and she loves them too!!!

Well worth the money and I do wear mine every day down the field but I have also suffered from wet bum syndrome - twice when I got back in the car an the rain ran down my jacket and made my seat wet!!!
