Waterproof rugs

What light waterproof rugs do you all reccomend? Want something stretchy along the withers so when horse puts head down it doesn't push down in him. For a 13hh hairy cob, just don't want him to get rain rot and get chilly when it's really raining hard.

Whichever you end up choosing - make it one with a filling of some sort. In my experience - all no-fill rugs are not waterproof. I've got a 50g lightweight on my boy at the moment, and it works well. Makes I've used and found good - Horseware and Weatherbeeta. If your cob is a chunky boy, try going up one size to give more shoulder/neck room. I've given up trying to find a perfect fit for my bulldog shaped QH, all I do is buy a good make of rug, one size bigger.

I recommend Premier Equine rugs, but my horse is 16hh. I like them because they cater for a broader chest and don’t cut the circulation off when your horse puts its head down to graze. My lightweight PE rug has survived the heavy rains recently so impressed so far (rug is only 2 months old)

I don't agrree that zero filling rugs don't keep out the rain, you do have to spend a bit and look for a higher denier. I've got a Rhino wug and a Weatherbeeta freestyle 1200D both of which have keep perfectly dry in the recent rain.

Sizewise I find the Weatherbeetas more generous in the chest however the Rhino is a high neck which doesn't put pressure on the withers as the pressure is elsewhere.

I'm using White Horse, seem to be pretty good and decent quality. Comes in 1.2k Denier and for a relatively affordable price. Brought mine for around £50 last year, still holdng strong and have used it all through Winter. However I haven't had it long enough to say for sure I suppose, we'll see after another Winter spell. Either way I personally don't recommend Gallop as they seem to be on the low end of the scale when it comes to quality. Mine tore pretty easily.. However, after discussing this matter with a friend at the field I have to say her view on easy tear rugs was quite interesting; "Easy tear isn't necersarily a bad thing. If your horse gets stuck or tangled up it can break away from it easier for starters. Tough rugs could make it to near impossible and in some cases could make the difference between life or death depending on the situation". Quite an enlightening thought if you ask me. But yeah, I go with White Horse at the moment. Also, if you're concerned about the neck I suggest getting one with a detachable neck. Those often fit best in my opinion and at least it gives you more freedom of choice. And if you're worried about it being waterproof I recommend getting some Nikwax. Proofing the rug yourself would be a way to assure it's waterproof. Also, if you're going to wash your rug in future you could consider getting the Nikwax wash to revitilise the proofing.
