Do you have any tips for revamping a wax jacket?

I have an old Musto jacket. I'm wondering if I could run it on a completely cold cycle with not detergent in the washing machine before drying and rewaxing. Or will that just ruin it?

Just sponge it and fabreeze it then rewax it.

I dont have a waxed jacket. But I used Nickwax on my Musto winter riding coat. I think a wash with one bottle and then re proof with the other.

I might be a heretic, but an annual wash of a jacket is a minimum, I think.

My Barbour wax jacket could almost stand up by itself after a year's heavy use .

Barbour used to offer a complete jacket revamp, they came back looking as new. I washed my daughter waxed jacket, came out completely clean no sign of any wax! Don’t think l’d advise it, just sponge off or see if Barbour’s will do a refurb

Is it a proper waxed jacket or a pretend version?

If it's a real one - damp sponge, wipe off, then heat up the wax, apply with paintbrush and let it dry.

If it's a pretend version, chuck in the washing machine and reproof with Nickwax

I've got one it's ancient and is rank and its now been resigned for wearing when I clip my horses, so it's filthy stinks and is covered in hair but it does stop hair getting on your clothes underneath

Thanks everyone for the replies, it's a proper wax Jacket, not a pretend one. I'm not at all familiar with Nickwax, I've only use the Barbour wax. I must take a look.

I'd recommend the Barbour restoration - jacket came back looking like new! Don't use detergent, sponging off mud and dirt is enough. After diy re-waxing, go over the jacket with a hair dryer to soak the wax into the fabric, then hang it in a cool place to dry and fix.

If you also want to clean the inside, not just the outside, try cold water + an odour neutralising spray for clothes.

E.g. this blog post from 2020, says it have been reposted, and updated for 2023, and mentions 7 anti-odour spray options.

I washed mine after I had had an incident involving falling in midden juice . Nothing less than a machine wash would have done for it. I rewaxed it myself using the tumble dryer and a hair dryer and it became serviceable again. I think a return to Barbour would have been better though if it had been a newer jacket.

I would machine wash my Drizabone every year or two, proper old fashioned wax, a cloth, paintbrush and hairdryer.

Tiddlypom, do you use detergent?

No detergent and no spin, hang out to fully drip dry before reproofing. Though I've just looked up the Barbour guide to reproofing a wax jacket and they say do not machine wash.

Tbf I've long moved on from wax jackets to the more modern washable and breathable fabrics, sorry.

We had ours done by a local guy, my barbour had just dried up thru lack of use but OH's (different make) was totally worn out, very bare and needed lots of small repairs, he did a great job, I'll try and find the details
