Any recommendations for a long waterproof jacket WITH A HOOD that you can ride in and will keep you warm and dry?!
I quite like the look of a mid-length waxed jacket but worry it will be really heavy when its wet and stink?! :o I don't know why but that's what i remember of them as a kid in the 1980s!! are they better designed now?
What are the shires ones like? or even better are there any non-horsey cheapy ones about?

I have one of these in a lovely brick red (aslo note they do it in a nice aubergine colour now) http://www.countrywidefarmers.co.uk/pws/ProductDetails.ice?ProductID=1513

I've never ridden in it but have often though you could, as the bottom back has a huge wide vent that velcros together, so I reckon it'd be wide enough to go over a saddle, and there are straps for the legs, so I presume it'd keep you knees dry if you adjusted it correctly. The hood is easily detached. I bought a size up so I can shove loads of jumpers on and is fab for playing pony club mum in it, but have always wondered about the riding as I hate scraping jodhs off my fat damp legs

I've often wanted a 'proper full length wax jacket', but it's always been the price that has put me off, that one in the link is very tempting, the only trouble is, heavy coats don't really do it for me, as they'd hinder mounting my horse, even from a block.
Prefer something of a lighter material, maybe like a cagoule, that was designed in the same style?

I've got a cheepy £45 Bridleway one. It's fairly light weight for a full length jacket.
It's not at all breathable and I've ended up a bit clammy if I've got too hot, but I've not got wet in it yet and I'm happy to ride in it - covers me up nicely.
I bought it because I never remember to put on waterproof trousers until I'm already soaked!

I've had my Barbour for years, its very battered and I'm not really a fan of it - but having just had to consign my old-fashioned riding mac to the dustbin, I mourned for days over it, especially as they are like hens teeth these days, no-one seems to make them; yes it did smell, but it kept every bit of me dry and looked incredibly smart, I thought - I'm stuck with the Barbour until I can go and look for something that will last forever (is that being too optimistic).

Have loads of other jackets, so looks like I'm stuck with them till I can go shopping. Luckily my trusty chaps keep my legs warm and dry.

Sorry I havnt been much help, hope you find something.
