Don't worry - I had permission!
I wasn't particularly looking forward to our first venture round the stubble this year as Jerry can bronc and get very strong when he gets excited. All day I've had butterflies knowing that when I met my friend for a ride she'd want to go round the stubble (it's her brother's land) I did kind of want to go too but with a lot of trepidation!!

Anyway, Jerry couldn't have been more relaxed! We had 3 really long canters - I didn't gallop as I wanted to stay in control! But I felt completely relaxed as we cantered along the hedge of a very long stubble field on one of the nicest evenings we have had this summer!
Sorry - quite self-indulgent I know but I was so pleased that I stayed in control and we really enjoyed ourselves!

Hehe! Yes - it's my friend's brother's land. Although the neighbouring land is also VERY tempting - the longest field in the area, going up a nice gentle hill.

I've been out on the stubble for 2 nights in a row now. I'm lucky in that there is one out the back of my field and that it links onto several others.

To avoid all dog walkers / other horses I have been getting on at 8.30 and getting back at 9.30ish!! My boy has been so chilled its almost unreal. Going out with a friend tomorrow so hopefully he will engage 5th gear then!

I intend to take my mare out on the stubble first thing Sat morning (again before the dog walkers and other riders) as I'm really not sure how she will react! She will be walking only (hopefully!)
 
me too we went in a 40 acre field just me hoss and a few crows. great for blowing away the cobwebs and lifting your spirits

I went for a gallop last night with 2 of my mates...

(disclaimer.....in YO's fields, before we start that old chestnut off again)

IT WAS ACE!.....my old lad fly-bucked the length of the field and still managed to beat the ex-eventer ...pulled up nicely with his tail in the air as if to say 'Ha!..beat that young uns!'

The second field was more sedate as it was heading back to the yard so we had a gool old rocking horse canter, it was lovely and sunny and we and the horses had a brill time....couldnt stop grinning.

The bi -hill field is being cut next......can't beat going up that flat out.....(yes, it also belongs to YO so I don't need to fill a form out in triplicate before-hand

Can I just be a killjoy about this - as a landowner myself I ha- ve had horseriders, mainly kids on ponies actually - coming in and riding around on my fields. I'm not just talking about stubble, but I've also found little hoofprints on good verdant green pastures where I've sold the grass to a farmer for fattening stock and the grass has been spoilt by some stupid person who should know better.

When I was in Pony Club it was drummed into our skulls not to ride anywhere without permission from the landowner, sadly the young people of today seem to think that everywhere belongs to them.

There is also the issue of insurance; as a landowner I have public liability insurance in place; one is stupid if one doesn't these days, but if someone comes in riding on my land without permission and falls off, horse is injured etc, that places me in a very difficult situation as regards liabilility, so frankly I would rather keep the gates locked and not risk it. Sorry people! But we live in a litigatious age and all we need is someone to fall off and sue the pants off us.

Also, beware hidden rabbit holes if galloping freely on someone else's fields. You won't know where they are (the landowner will!) and I've seen some rabbit holes on land which could easily cause a broken leg.

Sorry to be a killjoy! But it ain't all as simple as one would like unfortunately.

Hear your points, but as we have said WE HAD PERMISSION, it was on YO's lands.....are we are taking about stubble...not crops,grazing meadows,gardens, bowling lawns etc etc.

If we fall down a rabbit hole and break a leg- our problem....same as it would be out hunting but no-one goes on about that.

Back in the day (yawn, I know) no-one locked field gates and the world is still turning.

Thankfully where I live fields don't have gates and the farmers are happy for us to use them.....
 
My neighbour doesn't mind people going around his fields but he tells the kids that they have to COUNT the bales!

The land around here is rock hard. It''d be like cantering on tarmac and that's with a fair amount of rain too.

My boyfriend says he'd rather have horses on stubble than getting in his way when he's trying to lead corn back down the road.
