Ways of affording horses?

Ok - now id do realise that horses are a financial responsibility and if you can't afford it then you shouldn't be a horse owner ie. what would happen if your horse suddenly needed the vet and you couldn't afford it ...

- how do you afford your horse? Do you have more than one job, keep your horse at a friends etc. etc????

i have insurance for vet's bills....
i don't take many holidays, or have designer clothes etc....one of the girls at work thinks i'm sad as i wear tesco's £5 jeans, rather than £150 designer ones like she has...i prefer to keep my horses, where as she has no life outside of celebrity gossip magazines... i think she's the sad one!

I've always had a part time job alongside my own dog walking business to keep my horses.I try to keep them out as much as possible to save on bedding etc.
I have mine insured so most of the vet bill would be payed for,i had a large vet bill to pay last year after the insurance company paid their part i put the rest on my credit card,didn't take too long to pay it off if you put a bit aside each month.

Well at the moment, i dont currently own a horse buit has huge hopes for the future, currently searching for a job and plan on building stables and grassland, then im oing to build stalls inside and rent them out for a few bob. A jobs the best ill do.

i pay for everything myself, never had a rich family to help but i do lean on the oh every now and then, considering she insisted i buy him

I'm lucky as now I can afford the horses so it's not an issue.
However when I was 16 I took on my first full loan horse, having non horsey parents all the contribution I had from them was my £10 a week allowance. My horse lived out 24/7, he didn't have back shoes on. I worked in pub kitchens on the weekend and 1-2 evenings a week. Plus I worked for lessons and show transport. Parents paid for the horses insurance for my birthday.
 
Horse kept at yard at aunts house so no livery costs and I pay for every thing else out of pay. Just about to buy a house tho so I don't think that I will ever be able to socialise again!
Recently happened apon a good way to make cash, I babysit the boyfriend is the chauffeur, we got £60 the other night, nice!
 
Im 24 and work full time, live alone, dont drive so Indi is my only real luxury and i wouldnt change him for the world.

In the last 3 years he has cost me nearly £8000 in vets fees alone and but what ever he needs he gets regardless of cost. He is insured for vets fees but i tend to pay the vets and then see if the insurance will pay the claim etc.

Its been hard to keep him sometimes but getting rid is NOT a option. I think at the end of the day although having him is expensive i am entitled to have something i love.

Things should be alot easier when i pay off my loan to buy him!!!
 
I have one full time job which usually covers all the bills. I do save quite a bit each month which is to go towards a deposit for my first house which I hope to buy in the next year or so. However, if there was an urgent need for money for my horse (touch wood it never happens), I would just dip into my savings.

If there is something extra / expensive that I want, I try to do some overtime at my current job. I find it is better than getting a second job, as I can do extra hours as and when I want.

I do keep my horses at home. I still live at home because I'm trying to save lots of money at the moment, but I pay my way and don't get any financial help from my parents.
 
I pay for it all myself and costs me a bloody fortune!!! Have an ok job so that helps but still a struggle sometimes. so sorry guys have to admit my horses don't always have the very best brand of everything but they are happy, fit and healthy which is all I think matters!!
 
I feel quite lucky that my parents pay for everything, but I don't get any weekly money, before 2 weeks ago i hadn't been out and bought anything for myself for about 6 months (ie clothes, shoes..etc!), I helped paint our house last year, on't relaly get any christmas/birthday presents. And a big reason we moved to France was so that my mum and i could have a horse. My parents are also taking on a mortgage so that we can move to a place with more land, proper stables and maybe in the future somwhere to put a sandschool in.....I have even started saving money, I don't need all the luxuries that i know some of my friends have, I don't go out spending money when i have some....When we move it's going into the bank and not coming out until i REALLY need it!!
 
I make sacrifices i.e have not been on holiday for 6 years, I probably do not spend very much on clothes or going out. BUt to be fair if I did not have the horse i'd spend just as much and not be as happy. The horse keeps me sane
 
Every single spare penny goes on him... much to my friend's and boyfriend's disgust. It can be really hard to justify to non-horsey people but I love him and try to just and enjoy and not worry about it!
 
my wonderful gran pays for my horses livery, i pay for his shoes, feed, straw, hay and rugs etc. my mum pays his insurance.
my bf pays for his horse but i pay for his straw aswell as mine.
 
I work full-time to pay for mine and had to work all through uni (only 3 days a week) to keep Lady. None of my family or my OH would ever support my horses in any way (helping with mucking out etc or financially). My OH is buying me a bridle for my birthday and this will be the first ever horse related present either he or my family have ever brought me. My horses and cat are my only luxuries, I go out once a monh and rarely buy clothes as I have to pay half the mortgage and running costs of the house I share with my OH.
 
I work four days a week as a HCA at a hospital. My livery is cheap, £12.50 per horse, i have two ponies. They arent stabled if i can help it so that minimises bedding costs (i would stable if they needed it), the paddock has TONNES of grass, i wouldnt be surprised if i didnt need hay all winter! My older pony has only ever had half a wormer his whole life as he colic'd on the full dose for his size when he was a foal and he does fine off half, my other is only a yearling so only needs half a wormer as his full dose so i only have to buy 1 wormer between two! Insurance is probably the most expensive thing for me. My farrier only charges £50 for a full set. In total i probably pay around £200 a month, thats £100 a month per horse.
