WB vs TB?

I'd much rather have a stocky type TB with lots of bone and muscle, than any WB.

They have more character

I love WB's!!! i have a hanovarian mare (Donnerschwee (Donnerhall) x Sao Paulo), black, white star, one white near side hind sock, beautiful character, cheeky, fiesty, amazing attitude! love her to bits, TBs are boring and i just dont like them....sorry *runs and hides*

For me you can't beat a TB. They are fleet of foot, brave, quick thinking, light on their feet and (imho) a thing of great beauty! Mine can be sharp and lazy in equal measure and could never be accused of being boring

. Can appreciate the paces of a WB and their scope show jumping but they will never capture my heart like the thoroughbred does!

Well my boy is a British Warmblood and I love him to bits, but I didn't even know what breed he was when I enquired about him. He belonged to our friends from age 3-7, and now we have him. He's pretty laid back, gentle and very affectionate. However, he is also rather dense, rather stubborn and rather bolshy occasionally. He gets himself into pickles and then expects me to get him out of them.

I was really looking for an ID type, and probably it was too soon to be buying again, but he just kind of fell into our laps and we loved him regardless of his breed.

I would probably not want a TB because I'm a bit of a wimp!

Maybe the not predictable is a WB thing as my horse can go past something 10 times then spook at it then ignore it for a few more times then suddenly throw a paddy at it.

He also ignores and walks past scary things like rubbish trucks emptying wheelie bins but then will spook at a traffic cone at the side of the road

You are describing my horse to a T, last time I managed to ride, after about 10 mins in the school he decide that he couldn't possibly go down one side of the arena and threw all his toys out of his pram. He is also quite happy to go past scary corner of arena (where jumps are stored) in walk but spooks in trot

Must be a Westphalian thing.

Right, all warmbloods, are part Thoroughbred, I guarente it. All the orginal warmblood breeding stock was lightened and moderised with Thoroughbred blood. Some blodlines will have an awful lot more than others.

Trakehners are based on Thoroughbred and arab blood, so if you think Trakehners are a hot breed, then Thoroughbreds must be too. Trakehners are also used to refine some of the other warmblood stud books.

You could have a brnaded and pink papered Hanoverian by by Thoroughbred sire out of a dam by a Trakehner stallion, and he would still be a Hanoverian. Some of the TB and Trak lines used by other warmblood stud books and known for great ridability, some are used to improve the shoulder, the canter, etc etc. Different bloodlines have different strengths, some are known to be sharp and need a professional to get the best out of them, some are superb amateurs mounts.

I have had TBs just the same, some sharp, some really laid back.

Yes, my boy has Trakehner in his breeding. Not much and a few generations back. His great grandsire was Ladykiller, so definitely TB. Landgraf is TB and is his other great grandsire on the other side. He also has hannoverian in his breeding.

Like you say, it's down to the individual horse in a lot of cases. I did know one TB who was so laid back it was untrue. Saying that, he was enormously overweight so that probably had something to do with it.

to be fair, most warmbloods ive dealt with are dense lumbering offs who trip over there own feet..Lou x

Ah so you've met my guy then lol! He's sweet, but a total loon, acts like a gangling teenager (bit like Kevin and Perry lol!). he does have TB blood in him tho, like has been said a WB x TB is still a WB lol! Think you then get the best (and worst) of both!!

TB every time they can do everything. When a WB wins the Grand National, the Cheltenham Gold Cup or the Derby then I might change my mind.

It has to be a warmblood for me. I would happily have a full TB if I could find an exceptional one that had the paces and scope of my warmbloods. Yes - TB's like that are out there - and the ones that are, are often used to improve warmblood breeding. I don't mind the breed too much to be honest - as long as it has the paces and ability to do the things I want to do, which for me being dressage bod lends itself to a warmblood

yup, quite true my boys great grandad was Furioso, glad that horse was crap at running at better at jumping though LOL

Although Ive already answered this, I have found over the years I can leave a WB out and not come and find its leg twisted behind its ear the next day. But then as said its probably just the full TBs ive met.

I have a TB x Trak, best and worst of both worlds!

He is massively sensitive, can bolt, and can be ridiculously spooky (spinning is his favourite trick) but is also fantastic in traffic, bold cross country and super intelligent to school.
There is a lot to be said for his sensitivity - it gives him his character and he is one of the cleverest horses I've known - but it is also his downfall.
I think I'd look for something with slightly less blood next time, makes life easier!
