I'm looking for bitting suggestions to give us a wee bit more control at shows.
I used to compete in a happy mouth pelham with roundings but changed to a loose ring snaffle with a french link as I got a bit stronger.

Last night, my rider couldn't stop him and ended up cantering out of the ring into the warm-up, which is dangerous. He just gets so excited
I posted photos on here and someone mentioned that he looked uncomfortable in the pelham, which I had planned on using for showing although I could stick to the snaffle if it came to it.
In the Pelham with double reins:

Would you go back to the pelham or would you go for something else?

What about a 3ring gag with 2 reins? Then you pretty much have a loose ring on the top rein with the 2nd rein for back up if he gets a bit turbo charged? With the french link mouth piece if thats what he likes best?

I remember using a Dutch gag with my first horse. the reins were on the bottom ring and I still couldn't bloody stop him :p
I may try that with the double reins - thanks :)

What about a cheltnham gag with 2 reins, gag only in play when you need it.
My old girl needed it out hacking and galloping, only really needed it to be used jumping and fast work, rode off the snaffle rein the bulk of the time

Whats the difference between the cheltenham and the continental? Is it the amount of poll pressure and leverage?

I can bring him back from gallop in a snaffle no bother - he just needs something so I can remind him he needs to listen to me

Yes their is a fair bit of poll pressure with it, my mare went really well in it.
I only ever needed to bring the gag into play occassionally but was bloomin glad of it when i needed it

I personally prefer the action of the cheltenham as you can use the gag completely independently of the snaffle whereas you always have pressure with the 3 ring gag even on the top ring

ah right.. wonder if JW does gag cheeks? Knew i'd regret buying a patent bridle :D

I think the answer if to see if I can rent one of each and have a play at a clear round
