A friend has asked me to assist her in selling / rehoming a few ponies and a couple of green tbs,

For extremely sad but genuine reasons theses horses need to go ASAP, the owner can not afford to keep them any longer, they are not welfare cases but have been advertised, fed, farrier etc by me and my pal over the last 6 months.
I have suggested derby sales but having never been there I don't know what kind of sale it is, can't take them of its a meat man sale!!
Also has anyone seen the ads in HH the horses wanted ones, are these to be avoided or are they ok?

I've been to Derby and in my experience horses usually make bottom dollar or don't sell at all. The meat man does go and buy a few and there's usually lots of unhandled gypsy cob types.

I phoned 'webuyanyhorse' when we got stuck with a horse we couldn't sell - the chap sounded ok but only offered us a very low price and expected us to drive down to the home counties to do the deal. Luckily we managed to sell the horse privately the same week.

Despite the promises in the ad's I imagine these types of peolpe are only after horses that they can sell on quickly, so small ponies or green ones may be of no interest

Re the sales I have no experience of the Derby one, but would suggest your friend puts a reserve on them just above meat money prices......at our local sales (Brightwells) only the decent sounding horses are selling, and again for low prices.

Good luck to your friend as it is a tough climate to sell or rehome one horse, let alone multiple ones. Tbh pts may be the best option as at least the horses will not be sold to the meat man or the wrong home......

What type of reserves would you put on to stop meat man?
Don't know owner personally but friend knows her well and she really is having a proper ***** time! I may possibly have one or two of the tbs but if they sold that's better for me as I have no space and no time for more really!

I follow the sales prices at Brightwells - to give you an idea a mature horse with a good cv ie seasoned hunter or with PC experience are still only fetching around the £800/£1000 mark...

So a green tb may only go for half of that, assuming you get any interest at all. Approx 50% of the horses at the last Brightwells sales went un sold.

Sorry to be doom and gloom......

Oh god! Best tell OH I have adopted more tbs then :(

In all serious though looks like we may have think hard about PTS some, all though the owner probably really doesn't care ATM I don't want them going from dealers to dealers etc
:(

Derby is pretty low end sales, we go occasionally for the poultry sales which are on the same day. Sometimes something cute and small does sell well though, we have almost bought a shetland in the past that we felt sorry for but luckily other private bidders wanted him so we didn't bid against them.

What size/type are the ponies? PM me if you prefer, I do know someone looking for a child's pony.

Is she trying to sell them for a high price or just trying to find good homes?
How many is she selling and are they all backed?
Is it possible for you to take them in and bring them on a bit to make them more saleable and as them on for her?

Echoing derby being a pretty low end sale - you might be surprised if someone takes a fancy to one of the horses/ponies though! Would you be able to message me what your friend is trying to sell?

Going off at a tangent slightly,According to a newspaper article the other day where they featured two horses in a terrible state the meat trade has collapsed due to the horsemeat scandal ?

I asked a similar question a while back and got labelled as evil foul and uncaring, so be prepared for a few foul comments!!!

TB's at Derby will go for meat unless they are really good riding horses, even then they'll be lucky to avoid the meat man. Not sure how things are at present, as some else said the meat trade is in trouble, I believe Red Lion has shut down?
Couldn't she advertise them for permanent loan? Sounds like they could be useful given the chance.
