Ellie and I did our first ever hunter trial today, and we went CLEAR!!!:D

This was my first time doing a hunter trial in about 12 years (yes, I was 10 years old last time I went round XC properly!!!) and the first time Ellie and I have jumped competitively since 2004. I didnt think we'd ever do anything again, let alone cross country which, even before I had my fall, was always something that scared the life out of me!!!

I cannot tell you how amazed I am; when we walked the course last night, there were at least 3 fences I thought I'd be bypassing full stop - I've got such a hang up about ditches, water and drops, and this particular course was full of them! But when it came down to it today, Ellie was going so beautifully that there was no way I wasnt going to have a go at them all. And she was a star; there was a nasty rail with a wide ditch in front that I was totally freaked out by, yet Elz just popped it - she didnt even look. And we had a pretty big 'hesitation' at the down element of the quarry, but she didnt step back and ended up taking a huge leap....eek! The rest was simple; she was happy to go into the water, she flew the ditch without a glance, and even jumped through the sunken road without freaking out at the 'fallen tree' we had to jump (another of my Bogey fences!) Weirdly, the only one we nearly came to grief at was the steps - she's normally excellent at steps, but today I think we had a wee bit too much impulsion and kind of ended up in a heap at the top! Which was the opposite problem to what many other people seemed to be having....lol!

We went through the finish and I felt like crying; I never thought we'd actually do it. The loveliest thing was not actually feeling eaten up with nerves....even when we were BSJAing all those years ago, I dont remember ever feeling quite so relaxed before a competition. It was just FAB! :)

We also bumped into fellow HHOer Skewby and her lovely boy, which was wicked :D

I'm going to post all the lovely pictures that my brother has taken for me in the PG; here are a couple of my favourites though:

Thanks for looking! From a chuffed-to-bits MizElz x:)x

A massive, massive, massive well done you and Ellie! You have every right to be grinning from ear to ear. That first photo is just brilliant! He, he, and the woman behind in the 3rd photo. :D:D:D:D:D

aw, well done you. and your horse looks stunning x

Thank you! She does look well at the moment - a bit too well, methinks! She was meant to be out at night and in during the day this past week, but I've been unable to catch her in the mornings (cowbag - she spent all winter refusing to stay out, now I cant catch her!)...so she has spent most of this week out 24/7.:D

Thankies!!!! :D

There's a whole sequence of ditch photos - I've just put them in the PG now. That one was defo the best though!

I cant believe we've never done XC before! I had totally underestimated how fun it could be - I used to get so nervous as a kid, and always avoided it with Ellie. Now I feel we've wasted all those years...I'd have loved to have had a crack at some BE with her, because having got such a wonderful feel from her today, I'm sure she'd have loved it! We're both getting on a bit now though :D

Fantastic!! :D
Sounds (and looks!) like Elz enjoyed it so much, now you don't have any excuses not to do XC all the time :D :D

Don't give up on your BE dream yet...you've got the whole summer ahead of you.. ;)

Hehe I am fully qualified to testify, having seen MizElz do a few fences after I retired (due to heatstroke - me not horse lol!!) that she was going GREAT GUNS and have already pmed her to tell her to do some more!!!

Great to meet you and your lovely horse, hope to see you at another one :) with less heat this time!!! Oh and am going to pack in the fags before then too!!!!!!! Feel dead bad for letting my pony down now lol!! xx

Don't be silly - you didnt let him down! Nearly half of our class retired or were eliminated - the ground was so hard and it was so darned hot!!! I got to the top of the steps and honestly thought I was going to have to stop - I couldnt breathe! Luckily Ellie didnt give me any choice - I just had to get on with it :D

Hi all ....well done...just wanted to say that that is me in the background lol

Not really...but just wanted to make you all grimace...then laff lol couldnt resist.....but for the record it very well could be!

Fantastic news and you know how pleased I am for you :) .... :D:)
.... well done :):):):):):)

.... now I think you need to do some photoshopping on pic 3 :o .... to the left of you :o:o:o

Well done you. :D :D Glad it went well.
I read your post about going last week and saw the bit about bypassing the jumps. I had a giggle now you said you jumped them, because when i did a hunter trial last year i told everyone i would miss out one very scary jump. (I even told the person i was going round with we where going to miss it out as they didn't like it either) But once out on course i was like a thing possest and we jumped everything even the scairy one and got a clear round. :) Glad it was the same for you. It feels great doesn't it :D :D :D :D

Brilliant, brilliant - a huge well done!! You must be so so chuffed :)

I've suffered with huge nerves, especially jumping and when we went round our first HT I was crying with joy!

Thank you to everybody for your lovely replies! I'm still on cloud nine this morning - I'm so happy just to be out and about again. I honestly thought we would come to grief yesterday...so to have gone clear is just a dream really. I've never enjoyed XC so much, I just want to go and do it again!!!!

Monkeybum - unfortunately we cant make the Abbottswood one as we have a massive family gathering planned (1st anniversary of Nan's death, so I can't wriggle out of it :D ). The course is fab though - Ellie and I have been schooling round it all week! The Beaufort PC are running a ODE on 5th June, so thought we may have a bash at that instead! :)

Big thank you again to everyone. I went to check on Ellie this morning (and bring her in if she wanted to come) and she gave me the equine equivalent of the middle finger :(:D "You made me work in all that heat yesterday, I am NOT going to be caught today!" Bless her :D x

Ellie is easily my fave HHO horse, or at least the one I am most likely to thief :D

Well done you, you're both a credit to each other, it's amazing you've owned the same horse since you were 10!
x
