So Red's shoes came off (finally) on Tuesday! We got good news at our 6 week scan of her medial branch left hind so as planned we started our barefoot transition. She goes out at night (in a very small paddock due to injury), gateways have been pea gravelled and I've sorted her a little path from the stables to the field so she doesn't have to deal with the hardcore we have down. We walk twice a day - 15 minutes on the roads - she has the odd footy step when she hits a stone and we're a bit slower than with shoes but she's coping. She's measured for boots and whilst measurements are a little odd in front (wider than long) i'll be ordering in the next few days.

I will be keeping a record (inspired by Rockley) - pics are below. The video i took showed she lands toe first so we'll take it very slow. Very aware her left fore isn't so good but this is why we are doing this.

Not bad ones to start off with but plenty of improvements to be made, did someone frog trim?

I'd expect she will have a lot of chipping up to the nail holes soon and I'd definitely shove some hoof stuff in those frog clefts particularly the second as that looks deeper.

Thank you for sorting my pics! Yes frog was trimmed before - i hadn't expected my farrier to do do this so it was done without me noticing. She has pretty nice healthy frogs, it wont happen again. I've treated for thrush and pick out carefully pre and post walks. Hoof stuff for general turnout etc? Shes on pro hoof too.

Because the hoof stuff stays in I think it does quite a good job of treating gently but for a while.

If she's eating the pro hoof you are doing better than we did to start!

Also I meant to commend you on your photos :).

Thank you - I’ll get some ordered. She’s not a fan of the pro hoof but she does eat it eventually!

Thank you re the photos - I’ve read so many Rockley blogs and how you take them. My OH can now spot pre and post pics I’ve looked at so many!

the last couple don't seem to work, I'd expect you to get a much better heel on that near fore.

4 and a half weeks in. Starting to see some changes - mostly positive (i think) once you look beyond the aesthetics (heel buttress coming back?). She doesn't grow much hoof so it will take a while to see some real changes. Right fore flare is becoming very obvious. Any comments appreciated. Shes managing 25 mins walks (x2 a day) barefoot but does have footy steps. I have boots and will use as needed. Farrier is due Tuesday - other than not trimming frogs, any tips?

I'd prefer them not to touch sole or bars at this point too.
So just a tidy up of wall? She’s a touch footier than she’s been (still good on the smoother roads we use) but i had expected this from reading others experiences.

yup that's all I'd do atm, tidy and roll the wall. Bars tend to support frogs when they aren't great themselves (we trimmed F's once, he went footy and grew them back within the week so we didn't do that again lol).

On the second 4 week pic one I'd shove some hoof stuff in that frog crack

Thanks - i’ll be having a chat with farrier before he starts. Use hoof stuff and the paint on stuff - she’d just had s salty water foot scrub yesterday morning.
