Well our good streak came to an end today at Llanymynech JRN but I suppose these things cant last forever. Shall start from the beginning...

Got there at 7.45

and then spent ages in the secretarys tent while they checked out his vaccination records (his have be restared twice so that took longer to check) and then went onto walk the xc very fast. Thought it was quite a tough course with lots of questions but we had jumped clear here last year so was feeling quite confident about it but it would test us.

Dressage: warmed up really well, nice and active and listening. When we got into the arena I dont know what I did but it was nowhere near as good as it could have been. It was my fault completely and I dont have any excuses so i'd just have to live with it, was v frustrated with myself!! Was shocked to find out that we got 36.2

when id thought we'd be lucky if we broke 40. That cheered me up a bit

SJ: wasnt overly big imo but all poles and alot of people were having faults. Shrimp didnt let me down and jumped clear even though i lost my reins completely after fence one and somehow managed to jump no. 2 So we were in a pretty good position at this point.

XC: warmed up as usually and had been hearing all morning that people were having problems all over the course but didnt really want to listen to that. Started off over no 1 great, backed off no.2 but jumped fine same for no.3. Got to no. 4, a double of a narrow table followed two strides to an even narrower skinny. He really backed off here and it wasnt the most elegant of jumps but we got over it. I then had to push him onto fence 5 (unusual as hes normally at full steam by this point) but jumped ok. Now onto no. 6, a roll top followed by a ditch. Well came to the roll top backing off and not on the greatest of strides and stopped. Ok, doesnt matter i thought, came round again, he didnt want to know and stopped again. Put my hand up and retired.

Shrimp hasnt stopped like that in nearly two years and that was at Cumwhinton were we got eliminated as the ground was really hard and he just said no by fence 4. He hasnt stopped at all xc in the past year and the stops that we have had, have mainly been either rider error and just inexperiance (skinny's etc) I just knew he wasnt right and he told me 'no thanks, this is hurting and im not enjoying it.' He's a sensitive little thing

The ground was hard though had a good grass covering so thought it would be ok but obviously not. Even if i had represented for a third time, i knew we wouldnt have got over it.

I think I made a sensible decision as i would like to have a full season this year and pushing it at one event would have been pointless but I might aswell say bye bye to Weston now but hey-ho, the section was really competitive anyway so would have been lucky to get a place! Then again, out of the total scores that were up in my section when i left, 1/3 had either w/d or ret. after dres/sj, 1/3 had xc problems and the rest were clear but mostly with time so it definately was testing!

Shrimps now having a week off while ive got exams

and then were going to do the farm ride at somerford so its xc schooling but less intense.

So not so successful this weekend but as i said, we live to fight another day and we are both home safe and in one piece so what more could i ask for?
Thanks for reading and virtual chocs are coming------->

What a shame, hope Shrimp is ok. You did the right thing in retiring though if he didn't feel himself & didnt' want to jump.

I think you did exactly right, and he was saying ouch...
What about some gel pads for his feet?
Or that stuff you squirt in and leave?
The weather is also set to change next week so that may help him too.
Massive box of chocs on their way by virtual mail, put this behind you and see what you can do to help him..

Bad luck hun o well! Radcliffe hated the hard ground too you did the right thing!
You dont know how evie did do you?
She had a nasty horse fall Xc schooling a few weeks back.

Sorry to hear that about the xc - reminded me of my horse back in march at Munstead. He had only ever stopped once xc, and had jumped round the course fine a few times before. However, came out the start box feeling a bit sticky and backing off the jumps, which was very strange considering he is usually so bold. Got to about the 5th fence and he did the same, gave it a few tries but he said "no" too.

I then took him xc schooling over mini jumps to try and gain confidence and entered for tweseldown intro to try and get his confidence round a smaller course - however, exactly the same thing happened and he went to stop at the 2nd fence so i smacked him and he ended up falling over the fence. I got the physio out afterwards who said he was very sore, so again we are back to the mini jumps and i probably wont do any BE now until the ground gets better.

Hopefully today was just a blip for him, but can sympathise with you

no what you mean song did the same at the water at chepstow, but you did the right thing - if they dont jump it second time there not going to jump it!! But hey ho like you said live to fight another day and least he went well in the dressage and SJ!

Where you off next??

Thanks, he's already got the squirty gel in his feet which stops him feeling stones etc. but I think it was more jarring on his joints as hes got quite flat feet (typical TB!) Going to ask farrier to put the wedges back on again to help lift his heel.

I walked that course and agree it was very testing with skinnies all over the show.
My old horse (palomino with a huge legged girl on) went today she had 3 down in the sj and clear XC.

I though that the ground was really hard underneath.

Think you did well to get the clear Sj as poles were flying yesterday.

Never mind........ good luck next time.

Thanks for your views on PNs around your way......what about Tetton Hall?? any views.

Good luck next time

I think by the sounds of what I heard over the tanoy she was doing quite well but she was quite a bit after i think so her scores werent up. If she got round she did well as the course decimated the field today, got friends in the PN and they said only about half got round!

We're having a bit of a break, then we've got two PC events, one at the beginning of July, one at the end both at Somerford Park round the Novice which he jumped round fab in May. I know they will prepare the ground there but I think i'll do a raindance anyway!

Oh I totally forgot about Tetton as I can't do it this year
mad.gif

I havnt done it since '05 but its a galloping type course rather than techinical (nothing like this weekend!) all hedges and the like. It was my first PN (not counting cumwhinton) and we jumped round DC so yes, it is very good! And they did all they could last year to prepare the ground or so im told which is reassuring

Oh what rotten luck. Does sound like he wasnt on form, perhaps the exams/time off is just what he needs if hes picked up a bug or something?

Good luck at your next one, hopefully the boy will be back on form
smile.gif

I don't think it was a bug (could be but who knows) as he jumped fab in the showjumping but just didnt want to go on the xc and hes perfectly fine in himself. He started off the xc as per usual (racing start, throwing ourselves out the start box etc.. :grin) but just got less enthusiastic as he was going round and by fence 6 he'd had enough. I hope he'll be back on form too and I have faith in him
smile.gif

It could be anything, like you say just not feeling himself, ground, he over jumped something and tweeked a muscle got a slightly bruised foot or didnt like the ground - a number of reasons.
I didnt think much to the weather yesterday too bloody humid, and S could have felt the same.

Whatever maybe the week off is just what he needs?
smile.gif

Bless him, hes so cute.

Awwww...poor Shrimp. You coming to the next clinic - see if you can drum up some support for it as I have no bookings yet! LOL!

I cant do the 4th Aug one as its the same weekend as Berrington but can possible do the 18th but shall have to see how August plans out
smile.gif

Hope he's feeling himself again by the time your exams are finished.
Fingers crossed for some rain to soften the ground up a bit.
