I got back last night from a fantastic holiday in Santorini to find out that my pony had been rushed to the vets on Sat night due to colic where he had to have emergency surgery. Apparently there was a 360 degree twist in his intestine. The vets rang my mum and dad last night to say that he had started to get worse again and they thought it was best to put him to sleep.

He has never been sick or unwell prior to this. What a c**p end to a holiday I now feel completely empty (and feel really bad for my boyfriend as he proposed on Monday night and now I just can't stop crying - which sets him off). I don't even want to go and ride my other 2 horses or go and find a ring.

RIP Red

Really sorry, how awful for you

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. It has all happened so fast you must be devastated. I lost a horse suddenly in a freak accident some years ago and I felt completely numb for months. It's normal to feel the way you do, but I know that doesn't help.
Go and see your other two horses, they can't replace the pony you've lost but they still need you. I remember not wanting to ride after I lost my horse, I didn't have another horse so I occasionally rode my friends but I used to get so upset because it wasn't Ben. I ended up getting another horse soon after. He was no way a replacement but I found that looking after a horse and getting back into my normal lifestyle did help.
It's always bad to lose your horse but when it happens suddenly it's a terrible shock and you can't quite believe it's happened. Give yourself time to grieve and remember the good times.
Thinking of you at this sad time.

huge huge hard hugs but congrats on the engagement and try to concentrate on that now to help you get through this awful time (and get the biggest ring your boyfriend can afford!)

So sorry for you. I have previously lost a pony to colic. Last year when I returned from holiday I found that my beloved lurcher, Zak, had died from kidney failure whilst I was away.

It's like I have tried to blot the holiday from my mind now, hard as we were away 3 weeks in Fiji and NZ. I had a house sitter who the animals all knew.

Don't beat yourself up about this.

Your BF sounds lovely, use his support.

So So sorry. As another person said do go and see your other horses even if it is to cuddle them and cry and tell them all your feelings.
You do need to grieve, it is natural, i would be more worried if you were not grieving.
I lost a horse in different circumstances. I had her shot but through mental illness, she was physically well. It hurt so much i blotted it out. I did not want to set eyes on any horse. It made things worse. Please do all your grieving, let all your feelings and thoughts out and please do go give your horses a cuddle. They are good healers.
Sounds like you have a lovely fiance and congratulations. Its good you can cry together - then heal together.
Big squishy hugs. P.S. can you pass one on to your horses from me

how utterly horrible

at least your memories of your pony will be of when he was happy and healthy, although i know you would have wanted to be there. no-one can win

it took me weeks to look at another horse, let alone touch and ride again, but you will, you'll miss them too much

My condolences hun - you must be feeling very raw at the moment - wish there was something I could say to make in better, but RIP Red. Congratulations on the good news though - your engagement. xXx

I'm so very sorry for you. We lost our old boy (the first pony) on April 9th to colic too, so I understand what you're going through.

So very sorry. I lost a pony to colic many years ago and I still remember how much it hurt.

It must be strange getting engaged and having this happen but if your OH has any sense he will be supportive and sensitive to how you are feeling, which I am sure he is.

Hugs.

So sorry for your loss.
I went through a similar thing when I lost my loan mare. The owners were looking after her whilst I was away for the weekend. She colicked and twisted her gut, was too bad to travel to the hospital, so they made the decision to PTS. I came home to an empty stable.
Try and concentrate on your engagement, and remember the good times with your pony.
Huge hugs for you xxxx

((((((((((huge hugs)))))))))))))))))

consentrate on your other 2, it may take your mind off him a little. they won't let you forget but they will help you to move on
