Some of you may remember that I have two spins, Amber and Millie. About 2 months ago I posted after they'd stolen a bottle of metacam and they spent the weekend in the vets on drips! Naughty dogs!
A month ago Amber (13) had a fatty lump removed from her hock that she'd knocked and had gone horrid. I was worried about the op but she bounced through it and the wound healed perfectly. All was well in dog land.
Last Wednesday she went off her food. Very unusual as she was the greediest dog known to man. That even noticed her breathing had changed and she was puffing very oddly. Other than that she seemed cheery and normal.
Took her to vets Thursday morning. Temp and HR sky high. OUr normally no nonsense vet said she was worried so we were sent to another branch to have bloods taken..
We all waited in the car as Amber was less fussed. Vet came out and said WBC's were sky high so an infection somewhere. They wanted to admit her and put her on abs and a drip.
Went to get her out the car and she collapsed with blood pouring out of her nose. She was a big dog, full of lumps and bumps and vet said it seemed there was a tumour in or near her throat that had burst....so we made the choice to say goodbye to her.
We are bereft and it's only now I've felt able to write about it. My OH had had her 10 years and for 5 of those it was just him and her in a tiny house on a hill in the middle of the Pennines. I came along and she was jealous, getting in the middle of us and sitting between us on the sofa. She soon came round, but I was never the boss of Amber! We loved her dearly.
Our other spin, Millie, was sad, but I think that was more because we were. She's been quite clingy and has come into season. I picked Amber's ashes up last night and we'd planned to head up into the Pennines to scatter them in her old hunting ground, but the weather might have scuppered that today, we'll see.
We miss her so much and the house is so quiet.
