This morning, we lost Widget after a short illness, she was only eight so not old for a Basset by any means but she had aged badly over the last year after she had had to have that emergency caesarian and spaying which had all gone nastily wrong (she split stitches and everything tumbled out; had to wrap her up and back for more surgery) Three weeks ago we had noticed a small lump by a teat which D said would have to come out in case it spread and he would do it the next week; a few days later she was very lethargic, didn't want to go on walks or eat a lot - very unlike a Basset! She had a raging temperature so was put on Metacam which helped her a lot and she was soon bouncing around again quite happily. Last Tuesday, she went downhill again and I wanted to call it a day but was persuaded to carry on with more Metacam and tablets which did help a bit until Friday. D thought she might be better on other ABs so fetched them Saturday but it was a losing fight and she slowed right down; sleeping for hours or going into the garden where she'd lay under the bushes where she always had her first pups no matter how hard you kept an eye on her! She was peacefully asleep on the sofa when I went to bed early this morning and had died in the same position when David checked her around 4am. She is buried on the old railway line near our other old pets and I was fine until we lifted her into her grave, wrapped in a clean sheet, when I wailed like a baby.

With her last litter the day before she had to have an emergency ceaserian and spaying, she was lucky to survive this and we think it's possible, this illness stems from that. -

Finally, where she loved to be most, curled up on the chair with family all over her -

Even with so many others here, I'll miss the old girl, she was a treasure.
God bless, Widget.xx

Sleep well little lady, goodnight God Bless. Heartbreaking for you but it sounds as she went peacefully in her own home surrounded by her friends and family.

Oh Pat, I am so sorry to hear this.
Hugs to you.

I am so pleased I got to meet the wonderful Widget, even if she would not give me room on her seat!

She'll be bossing them in the hunting field in the sky good old lass (though not old).

Hugs to you all xxxx

Thanks everyone, it's kind of you to sympathise, the house is full but it's empty if you know what I mean but at least she's out of pain now which is the main thing. Funnily enough, the others haven't worried at all but they are so used to hound pups coming on walk or old pups coming for their holidays and going back home that I don't think it registers with them who's here and who isn't.

Kate, I well remember her trying to push you off! You were honoured, at least she gave you part of her seat, she didn't do that for everyone and when she sat on you, you didn't have a chance to move either!

Yes I think it took a couple of days to get feeling back in my legs!! Even though you have a housefull there will be little bits you miss or something happens & you think Widget would of done...

It's the same with the hounds. We had one (dog) who would when ever on exercise if there was a bitch coming to season he wold hang at the back out the way! Always let you knew before the bitches did!

Told Howard & he said I want one now! He did say that if I hadn't got Quail he would of not let me get another when Chewie went as he said the heartache would be to much. So that is his reasoning of having a house full!
Like you say with them coming & going the other hounds do not catch on so fast but am sure the longtimers will of know she was not good.

Hark forrard Widget

I'm so sorry MFH - it's always so hard and I wish I had some way to make it easier for anyone who loses a beloved pet! Huge <<<<hugs>>>>

Oh P I am desperately sorry to read this

You wouldn't believe it, but I was only thinking about the pups just an hour ago whilst walking my own dogs - I was going to ask to see photos of the pups.

In a way, it is lovely that she died at home on the settee in peace though.
