I currently have a rising 2 yr old, although he was very late foal and is only 15 months old, and a rising 3 year old pony cob. They are turned out on 13 acres with another 15 month old and another rising 2 year old. I'm going to look at a weanling tomorrow. Would he be ok turned out with them? They are all 'nice people' and get on really well in their batchelor group. They are all entire at the minute but will be gelded at the end of this month, with the exception of my rising 2 year old who will run on until the spring.

The current youngsters are all under 14hands, the pony cob is the smallest at 12.2hh. The weanling currently stands at 13.2hh, so they arent huge youngsters!

Would the weanling be ok? Hes only ever been turned out with his mum and hes obviously that bit younger than the others.

I don't see why not, my filly was weaned and turned away as a yearling with a group of 3/4 year olds, she was obviously the underdog to start with but she's now 2.5 and right in the thick of it. I would just keen an eye on it to make sure that he's getting his share of any feed/haylage and not been bullied.

The rising 3 yr old is the current underdog, but not to the point where it worries me, its just that hes soo placid hes practically horizontal! He tends not to get involved in the rough and tumble the others do! They dont currently get hayed in the field as theres LOADS of keep :) and all feeding is done with them out of the field and tied up with individual buckets, so hopefully it will be ok :)

I'm just very wary of introducing a baby into the herd and having it not work! I wasnt even looking! But I have been admiring this particular foal over the fence for a while now, when I accidentally stumbled over his ad on line. It wuld have been rude not to ring and ask, right? :D

Now I just need someone to remind me that theres a recession going on and most people are selling horses not buying more! lol :D

No reason why he can't go out with the others at all. Just introduce slowly, one at a time is what I do, or over a fence. I have a pair of 4 month old colts, in with a 6 month old and a 19 year old nanny, an 8 month old is joining them this weekend and 3 more weanlings at the end of the month, and once the frost sorts the grass out a bit, I have 4 or 5 in-foal mares going in with them too for the winter. I really believe that youngsters benefit from adult/older company to learn respect and how to be a horse.
