Wear High Vis - even in the summer...

Oh no brighteyes I am certainly NOT stupid! I live in a very rural area, AND I am able to ride my horse and exercise my dog, as I have complete control of both. If by any chance an idiot driver ran into me I dont think it would make any differance if I stood out like a beacon or not. I just choose not to wear Hi Viz. Its not a crime YET!

Oh dear. "complete control" of a horse... i sincerely hope you are joking, but I fear you are not.
I honestly hope that when the time comes that you realise that this is a total self-delusion - however brilliant a rider you may be, however well trained your horse might be - it is not at the split second that a driver tries to go past you at, say, 50mph, when wearing hi-viz might have influenced the driver to go slower, just in case...

i wear hi-viz for my horses' sakes, far more than for my own.

do you have nothing else to do bar make little asides at me? it was Brighthair that made the comment-it was directed at me and not Pastie in Cumbria, or do you know differently? being as she and are the only burkes in the world that dont wear Hi Vis it seems to be bit of a witch hunt, what happened to free speech and different opinions???

Oh right, it was Brighthair that made the comment not the OP at all?

please just leave it and get off my back, are you enjoying yourself? i have tried to be pleasant to you to no avail- ive asked you questions which you do not answer, so whats it all about??????

hessy12 "V original and sums up my exasperation at seeing this topic on AGAIN. I also found the tone of the original post patronising. I do not need to be told how to be safe on the roads, with or without a horse. Snore, yawn, falling asleep."

Hessy12, I'm not sure what you find patronising about the below statement and fact. Perhaps it's your own way of reading things that has lead you to think this way? The fact that there has been many readers of this topic and many replies shows that it is still something people would like to comment on and share their stories about. It's not up to you what people post about. If you don't like the subject then move on to the next post.

Don't forget your high vis...it might not be fashionable or a pain in the bum to put on but a rider Wearing luminous and fluorescent items can give vehicle drivers a valuable THREE seconds extra ‘reaction time’ that could save the life of both you and your horse! To put it into context those three seconds are equivalent to a car, driven at 30 mph, traveling the length of a full size dressage arena!

And as mentioned in a later post to the original...

I added this post as the topic came up in our brew room the other morning. Someone was laughing at someone else because they looked like a neon light with the amount of hi-vis they had on themselves and their horse.
It was clear when they went out for their hack but the mist/fog about half an hour later came and visibility was down to about 100 yards.
The first thing we saw coming though the fog was Emma's band round her hat and the jacket along with Tinkers hi-vis leg wraps and martingale...you couldn't see her face or Tinker until they were nearly in the yard.
Hence why the post says even wear hi-vis in the summer.
The fact that hi-vis gets you noticed and adds stopping time for drivers has got to be a good thing.
I apologise if you have had this post before and i don't care if you wear hi-vis or not, that's up to you, but please remember that there are new people joining H&H all the time and many may not have read all 100,000 posts. As someone said earlier, if it helps one person then why is it a bad thing to post about it again?
You don't have to read or comment on every post. If you have read something before then go to the next post...walk away and leave the comments to others who find the subject interesting.
There are often repeated posts about Laminitis or what do you think of my advert...what should i call my horse and at the moment blooming england flags but you don't see comments like "Not again" or "leave us alone it's up to us what we do!!"
I wear Hi-Vis...if you don't then fine. I eat meat, if you don't then that's fine. I drink red wine and not white, if you like the other way round then fine...each to their own...Hi-Vis...it's up to you but don't slate people for posting a topic, it's just rude.

As for the people having ago at each other, I'm not sure how it's got to that stage? H&H used to such a friendly helpful place for advice and to vent but just lately it has turned in to a sniping, bitchy, catty forum where people jump on comments and make things personal...All i wanted to do is share a fact (which some of you obviously already knew) and the reason why i posted.

To be honest this will be the last time i add a new topic to this site as i can't stand the attitude, rudeness and arrogance of some of the people on here anymore.

I will carry on helping people where i can with their questions etc but until this site stops turning into a cat fight over every post then I'll leave you all to it.

At the end of the day its personal preference whether you wear it or not. I just dont see the point in slagging one another off about it, as you cant change peoples minds.

Quite right shell1978, this thread has being going on far too long. If you notice I have never been rude or personal, I have just said that I dont wear the stuff and the reasons why I choose not to. In return I have taken some of the bitchy replies on the chin, my choice to post on such a contentious thread. I have NOT slagged anyone off, I have left that to the others. I am thick skinned though!

Pastie - am I right in saying that you don't wear hi viz becaused you don't ride on any roads?

So, say you are hacking out on the hills and your horse trips/slips/stumbles (not something that anyone can control). You fall off and are knocked unconscious. Your horse returns to your yard/home alone, raising the alarm and the air ambulance is sent for.

Now, since you aren't wearing hi viz, the air ambulance takes twice as long to locate you (say an hour instead of 30 minutes). What if, during that 30 minutes, another incident arises that would benefit from the ambulance being there. Say a child is involved. But they can't get there because they are too busy searching for you :(

Is that really fair, when you could have done something so simple to prevent it? It's not so far-fetched, really.

I am very lucky as don't have to ride on the roads very often but if I do I always wear Hi-Viz. I have so many different tabbards. You can get soem really fun ones now, with all sort of things printed on them.

I think another important reason for wearing Hi-viz, that if you are ever out riding by yourself and thrown from your horse, being left seriously injured, you are more visible to people on foot and in the air.

Since the introduction of hi viz ..more people have been involved in incidents / accidents while wearing hi viz than people not wearing hi viz ? Also the number of accidents has not reduced and the trend is still upward.

Therefore, unless more people wear hi viz than those that do not , I'm affraid it would appear that you are no safer with your hi viz on when that maniac comes along as he /she will be blind to you whatever your wearing.

Bit like speed camera's they do not stop speeding or reduce accidents , but they do generate cash.

Propaganda sells ...that's why hi viz sales are up .

Blimey, that was brave of you defender!! wait for the flack!

Now you need to balance that against how much traffic has increased since the introduction of Hi Viz and also how the horse population has grown.

Your statement seems rather flawed!

Got a study to back that up?

National Road traffic accident statistics 2008-9 produced by the Department of Transport in cooperation with the Police - not for public consumption. ( unless you have a source).

The only people who benefit from Hi Viz are the manufacturers.

By the way the stats. are similar for the construction industry ...hi viz hasn't helped there either.

I have no wish to deter anyone from wearing Hi viz as it a personal choice, however , you should be aware that statistically it will make no difference....

The risk factor will not be lowered . The additional three seconds advance warning will not save you on a bend in a narrow lane .

It may not make a difference on a blind bend and hi vis will not make anyone exempt from having an accident, but that 3 seconds on an ordinary stretch of road can make a difference to a driver noticing you and taking evasive action if needed.

I was given a free exercise sheet and tabard by the MOD - the reason was so that the low flying planes would hopefully see a horse sooner and avoid flying overhead and scaring the horse. So it must be useful in beiing seen sooner, as all the BHS images show.

Personally I'd like to give me and my horse every chance.

It is true that casualty figures in the UK are falling and compare favourably with other European countries, although nine people killed, and around 100 seriously injured, on our roads every day is not a record to be proud of.

Even so, levels of casualties are not an adequate measure of road safety. One of the reasons why casualty rates fell in general in the UK is that people stopped using the streets as they once did. In recent decades, the number of pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists on the roads has fallen dramatically.

Casualty figures fall because people walk, ride and cycle less.

Prohibitions include advice to vulnerable road users to wear protective and high visibility clothing, Many of these comments are enshrined in the Highway Code, which though amended as recently as 2007 still contains pointed advice to vulnerable road users to take extraordinary measures to protect themselves. This makes them liable to contributory negligence if they do not follow the restrictive advice given.

As to the comment about the speed camera...

Speed cameras are a very effective way of discouraging drivers from breaking the speed limit, and so reducing the number of people killed and seriously injured. Cameras are a proven success in saving lives - they reduce the numbers of people or seriously injured at camera sites by 40% on an average.

Sources...Highway code, Charity "Brake" and Department Of Transport...on the Internet and no need to have an "inside Source"

Oh lord......I have never heard such drivel before!!! If thats the case all walkers, runners, rock climbers etc should wear it too!!! Actually anyone who leaves their house should have hi-vis on!!! I will remember that next time I want to pop down the shop for a pint of milk!!!!!!

If you wish to believe the published statistics that's fine ....

Please please please ..do not support the use of speed cameras as the published figures as so far from the truth.

Several local authorities have now started removing them ( Swindon being the leading light ) as they have actually seen an increase in accidents due to the cameras being present and there is no factual evidence to support their use.

Anyway that's me done .... best wishes to all.
I've made my point

No problem Shell1978, apologies for provoking you so much so that you needed to use a total of fifteen exclamation marks in one paragraph :D

I'll think again before posting "drivel" in future ;)

I was merely trying to illustrate that wearing high visibility clothing is a safety measure which is beneficial to others, as well as the individual concerned. On the roads, this amounts to allowing other road users the possibility of avoiding injury, off the roads, it allows rescue teams to do their jobs properly. It also allows you to be spotted by a wide variety of people, including, but not limited to, pilots, shoots, dog-walkers and other riders. Useful, no?

And maybe climbers, walkers, runners et al should consider wearing hi viz if they are carrying out these activities alone in very remote areas. Of course, some of them already do......

Incidentally, though - I'm not aware of anyone needing the air ambulance aftetr going shopping for a pint of milk - perhaps you could elaborate? :D

That's a very mature comment to add to the discussion, thankyou ;)

shell1978, take no notice darling, they all live in the suburbs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Defender you haven't made your point. You have only told us that you are the special one that has access to the stats & us mere mortals can't be trusted with them. If they are so clear publish them - otherwise why should I beleive you.

I don't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
