Because having mine on probably saved my life or from very serious injury!

I have been riding Lewis all around Weston lawns and he has been walking and trotting and has not put a foot wrong, he has been there since a yearling and has met all traffic, tractors, JCBS, etc and has been long reined around the show centre for months, but on Wednesday afternoon things took a turn a little differently than usual, after getting on him and heading over to the collecting ring to ride across the carpark everything was ok, I was with people I may add walking next to me. For those of you that know the centre, I got to the Marque, where a grounds man was, and as I walked directly next to him he started up a petrol strimmer!

To which Lewis blindly panicked and bolted across the car park, I did try to slow down and stop but he was running blindly diagonally across it. I thought about aiming for the grass bank, then looked at the field but the electric wire was up, somehow I managed to lose a stirrup whilst going flat out and when my weight shifted he started to bronc!

I tried to stay on aslong as I could but the Hardcore carpark just came coming and before I knew it I had gone over his head flat out and SPLAT! I have managed to fracture my collar bone again, gain stiches to my knee, deglove my shoulder, arm and elbow of skin and split my hat into TWO! I was down and out for about 10 mins and I went to A & E where I had all Xrays, and scans done, where I was cleaned up and where I had a stone removed from my arm!!

Im back at work though and apart from feeling extremely sore and stiff havee come out of it not too bad, and Lewis, despite being shook up that evening is 100% himself! Thank goodness, so people, please be aware of your surroundings and ALWAYS wear your hat!! You never know when that next fall maybe!!

p.s Would love to know where I stand legally, I now have no hat and no bridle as I ripped it off his face when I fell!! OUCH!

My god!

Although the "always be aware of your surroundings" should be told to the bloke who picked up his strimmer!

Berk!

Your injuries sound serious enough to me - hope you aren't too uncomfortable for too long xx

Blimey that is an awful set of injuries

, thank goodness you had a hat on or you would be dead, people are unbeleivable, the guy with the strimmer is either ignorant, stupid or both, or did it on purpose

Glad you are alive and hope your injuries don't cause you too much pain xxx

I think it is only a matter of time before someone posts the news someone has died because they were not wearing a hat, if they have not done so already.

Ouch and you are very lucky!!! Hope you get well soon.

The BHS will give you advice on that, stupid man didn't he see you?!!

OMG - what a nightmare!

Sorry you were injured, but glad to hear it is all mendable - dread to think what would have been the outcome without a hat ...

Eeek! That sounds painful and scary! Glad you are not (more) seriously hurt.

A bit silly of the guy not to check for horses before starting the streamer up in the middle of a show centre!!

Ouch...glad you are OK.

Problem is we can't assume that Joe Public understands that a Horse may be spooked by a strimmer. Nothing unfair either way about that, not everyone is Horsey, nor does everyone consider a Horse is a flight animal. This is why riding without a hat is questionable. I hope your story encourages more people to wear one.

Your story made me come out in goose pimples. When I was in the plastics unit last year someone came in with a degloved hand. It was a really painful injury.

Pleased to hear you are on the mend. Take care.

Fair enough that not all joe public are horse aware BUT if he was an employee of the centre it should have been explained to him when he was employed. If he was an outside contractor it should also have been explained to him before he started work (site induction; fire assembly areas, toilets and site risks which include HORSES). His lack of knowledge could have resulted in him injuring himself (could have been kicked / trampled ).
I would write to the centre and inform them of what happened and ask whether this guy received any induction before he started work. The centre should presumably have public liability insurance?

The worker has been a worker here for months, contracted or not, BUT I will say, I was advised one day whilst riding Flint in the warm up that I was not covered by their insurance UNLESS I signed their contract that they had drawn up, which I did! So unless a peace making offer is assingned/ optioned to me I will be, regardless of wether I work for them or am stabled there, going through their insurance to recover a little amount that will enable me to continue riding Lewis, though money I do not have to hand. I do not think that a hat AND a new bridle is to ask for under the circumstances, AND I have worked for them for the last 3 years seasonally. I think its very un fair. Though saying that when i was attacked by a dog of theirs last year and needed to go and get my TB done and my leg checked at A and E I didnt recieve ONE apology, yet when a customer did they cleared the whole bill off their weekend stay at a show and let them have a free Kingsland jacket. Looking back at what I have put, I do believe I deserve atleast the equipment I have lost because of negliengce on their part
