I know these riding hat threads have been done a hundred times before but please think before not putting one on.

My friend is burying her 19 year old daughter today due to a bad riding accident out hacking and not wearing a hat. The pony has never put a foot wrong and no-one still knows what happened last year when she fell. She was in a coma for a long time and we all thought she was getting better. 10 days ago she went into theatre to have a plate put in her head and died on the operating table.

The family do not deserve this. No family should ever go through what they are going through. Yes it is your head and your life but please think of your family and friends. do you want them to go through this.

RIP Jade.

What a tragic way to go. I think that it is always worth considering the effect on your family when deciding not to wear a hat if anything should happen, my condolonces go out to them.

How terribly sad for all involved - must be devastating for the family to think that the tragedy may have been preventable. :(

How awful, but thank you for sharing this story. I know its too late for your friend but it may make others stop and think, so something good can come from her very sad death.

Good G*d! I am so sorry. How terrible for all concerned :(

My story is well known on here, but your post has just brought home how close I came to dying last September; if I hadn't been wearing a hat I wouldn't be here.

Our condolances to her family and friends.

RIP Jade.

I can never understand why people don't wear their hats - it just so so dangerous and horses are unpredictable and anything can happen. That said, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, huge condolences to all concerned. Thank you for posting, if it makes just one person put on their hat, it's worth it.

How tragic for all concerned but hopefully Reading this might make people think. My friend once tried to ride with no hat and I refused to go out with her and held onto her horse until she got off and went and got her hat.

Sorry that you have such a sad story to post and thoughts are with the family. My friend fell off, after being hit in the head by her own horse, on Wednesday and has just been discharged from hospital with post concusion syndrome, I dread to think what the diagnosis would have been if she had been hatless.

I have said this many times on here before, but I always wear a hat and I cannot really see why you would think it OK to get on a horse (any horse) without one. That is a selfish act to be honest.
Having said that I feel very sad that Jad lost her life. I hope the family's hurt and pain becomes bearable at some point in the future.

How dreadfully sad. My condolences to your friend and family.
As someone who landed on her head on the road a few weeks ago, (on a brand new hat fortunately), I completely agree with you, Hollybell, that every-one should wear a hat every time they ride.

How terribly sad. Which reminds me today someone at my yard decided to jump on her 4 year old horse bareback without a hat and ride him down to the field in just a headcollar (does this quite regular I think) and I think how stupid as acidents happen when you least expect it.

That is absolutely tragic, I just cannot imagine what your poor friend is going through, so young, my thoughts go out to her.

I am with you, I would plead with everyone to always wear a hat riding, there is no reason good enough not to.

RIP x

How terribly awful im so sorry to hear this. RIP Jade.
And i totally agree with you, its never worth the risk to go without a hat. ever.
