The talk around here is that summer will arrive mid August, whether it will or not is another matter! Apparently, when the summer was as bad before (can't remember which year) once the weather did change, then it kept fine and cattle were still out in December so take heart!
Usually, after a bad spell it does even out so we can catch up; I hope so this time, we're still waiting to do our hay!
I think after the dreadful summer you have had that a cold winter will be a blessing.
A cold, dry winter is a hundred times better than a wet one. Last winter I saw more snow than I have ever seen in my life, and according to the locals it was mild, so 3 months with 2' on the ground and temperatures at minus 10C (on a warm day) was a good one.
I absolutely loved it! Except maybe the bit about taking 5 minutes to get dressed before venturing outside, but I never had as much as a single cold toe or finger. My arthriticky hips stopped complaining about the constant damp of Wales, and I haven't had a single day of SAD since I've been here, it seems I had it 12 months a year in the UK. So, it would be good for those of you with achy bones too. The horses lived out 24/7, with heated water troughs (OK, until our water froze for 3 weeks and I had to cart it from the creek, but even that was fun) ad-lib hay and MW blankets, they coped brilliantly and came through winter looking well.. No mud, no rain, just sun shine and blue skies most days, bring it on. I am really looking forwards to winter this year, I don't actually like the summer too much, an average temperature of 26C wears me out.
Give me dry cold any day, I stepped out of my door to this most days and just smiled.
Well whatever happens with the weather I am sure we will all manage...and our horses will because they cope better than we do! That's what rugs and stables are for! My main concern if for some dry weather asap so everyone can cut their fields...not bothered what weather we have in winter so long as I have food to feed my boy!
I agree, I would far rather have cold, dry weather than another wet winter. I love walking the dogs on a bright, frosty day, and as long as the neddies have lots of food they don't seem to mind cold at all.
Rumours around here are that the gulf stream is to blame and we could be stuck with this weather for a while yet. Possibly summer might arrive in September. As for winter, I understand that a cold, icy winter could be in order but I for one would prefer that to the constant rain we had last winter - it ruined our paddocks.
