As the title says.....Do they actually work to keep your horse cooler in the sun? Im just asking because i have a tiny pony that doesn't do well in the heat, she has to be brought in and washed down. I will try her with one of these rugs if they work though.

I have one for a horse that gets sunburnt when freshly clipped. He needs to be clipped in summer as he sweats too much to work. He's a naturally hot horse and the Kool Coat is the best thing I've found. The mesh panels allow the breeze to flow through and lift the sheet when there's a decent breeze.
He does have access to open barns and fields with trees and high hedges which helps a lot. Previously my horses were on individual paddocks with no shelter and I had to bring them in out of the heat or graze in hand along leafy lanes, purely to give them respite against the sun.

I used one last year. Not sure if it's intended for a great deal of outdoor use as it only has a clip-on single girth strap to keep it in place, so wouldn't be great on a horse that rolled a lot or was good at wriggling out of their rug. It's fine as a stable sheet and I found it okay for my filly when she was standing about quietly in the paddock during warmer days <22 degrees. Hotter than that she still got too hot wearing it (sweaty across flanks) and I'd still have to bring her into the stable block where it's much cooler.

Mine has to be protected from the flies and this year I've bought her a Sweetitch Hoody but am a little worried at the weight of it. It's quite a bit heavier than the Kool Coat (which I've now sold on eBay as it was outgrown) so I shall have to see if the Kool Coat's mesh sides really did help (or not).

I've got one for my dark lad when its very sunny, there is no natural shade in fields. It does work he doesnt come in sweating like he does without. I think the newer ones they do now look like they would work even better.

ETS mine has cross surcingles and leg straps

I have a black horse and she gets boiling in the sun. She wears a kool coat all summer and it keeps her much cooler. Also stops the flys!!

I used kool koats last year and they are about to start wearin them again. Kept their coats lovely and they didn't sweat. Ones I had were the traditional summer sheet type with x surcingles etc. They are generously sized :)

The original model is far better than the newer mesh model. The original one is tight weave cotton all over with cross surcingles and leg straps, i have the full neck versions and the no neck versions. Last my hooligan ponies very well.

Thanks for all the replies. The pony in question is currently in 'fat camp' but there is no real shelter from the sun. I have been bringing her in through the day but she's not to happy about it and much prefers to be out. These rugs are quite pricey so its nice to have everyones opinions on them before i splash my cash lol! Thanks :)

I paid £29.99 for another new one just on Tuesday, the original KoolKoat Combo version. They are normally only around the £32ish mark......

I have just bought beau the new version as she gets badly burnt and her fly sheet is knackered. Seems ok so far. Stays in place when she rolls but she hasn't been out in the rain in it yet.

Love mine, its in its 5th year!!! It has required a little sewing in a couple of places where horse got over familiar with the hedges, other than that its probably the oldest rug I have :)
