Ive decided to treat my boy to a new rug as his Rambo wug is finally past it. It was a 6'6 and fit a bit too snug so I got him an old style 6' 9 and its rubbing him on his shoulders

so I fancy the WB Arion but I cant find one reasonable enough. There are Oricans though for about £60, what are they like and does anyone have the detach a neck (which may be a new design?). Has the zip lasted? Do you ever 'detach the neck' or do I just go for a combo? I just worry that I wont get as much use out of it as a half neck version as it may be too warm. Decisions decisions

I have a full neck Orican, bought it last winter and have been happy with it. What breed is your horse, as mine is a tbxwb and has only sweated up a little bit once or twice, but I put this down more to the inner lining than the actual filling, as he is fine in same weight cotton lined rugs (my Orican has the synthetic shinny lining- hope that makes sense!)

I have 3 Arions on myhorses and they are fab and on their second winter. Two of my liveries have the Orican Detch a neck and they are not as long in the body and don't seem to fit as well as the Arions, its the old scenario you get what you pay for. The zips are brilliant and so long as you keep an eye on the velcro they don't come undone. At least with the Arion you get a free fleece worth about £30 so if you work that into the price they are really not that bad I think Equestrian Clearance are the cheapest for the Arions.

Thanks for replying. EQ have sold out of the Arion

and they are so much dearer everywhere else. I love my Rambos apart from the sizing issue and feel if I was to spend much over £100 then I'd rather have one of them.
My boy is a proper MW being ID x TB x Shire. I tried an Arion a couple of years ago and his normal size seemed big but they are supposed to be generous arent they. He could well have filled out as well since then.

I know what you mean, my last horse sweated in anything with a nylon lining. She had to have the Shires Highlander as it seemed to be the only rug without the nylon linig.

I bought the full neck orican this year for my little tb who feels the cold and it's been a brilliant buy. It is a warm rug though. My girlie is prone to feeling the cold but it's got her through this cold weather better than any other heavyweight rug i've had for her.

Mmm, he could be too warm then. Hes in a heavy weight Wug at the mo though. He had combo's before I moved on to this yard but I had to replace them due to a rug ripper in the field.
Just found an Arion combo for £79 (if they have my size) so think I may just go for it

We have the Orican Combo with the all in one neck had it 3 seasons horse goes out in all weathers, good buy can recommend it, ours is light blue and dark blue at the bottom. I think this years new colour is dark blue and dark green.
Ive looked at my winter 2008/09 Weatherbeeta catalouge and the recommended weatherbeeta price is £69.99.
Try Ayr Equestrian web site, we have just bought a weatherbeeta combo under rug from them, they were the cheapest by far, and it came in 2 days.

I had to get one of these for my Shire x Tb mare, as nothing else was suitable. She is around 6'9" or 7ft rug size, but my problem was that the normal Combos wouldn't close round her neck (she's not overweight either!).
I bought a 7ft Orican Detach-a-neck for the cold weather...and it seems to fit her quite well without any rubbing yet (but she's only been wearing it for about 3 weeks).
The neck is fitted quite firmly, without big gaps, and she seems to like it. It is a bit shallow for her though...slightly miniskirty.

Ive seen 2 different types described as detach a neck. I could be wrong but I think the newer version is the zipped one??? Which one have you got? My boy has a big deep chest which is why the Rambo isnt great on him.
I will have a look at Ayr now, thanks

Mine is black/coral, and has velcro neck attachments, which are quite secure. My girly isn't the most delicate flower, build wise but it seems to fit her ok.
I have seen them in quite a few sales for around £60.
Or, if you want to take a chance with less than ideal service (my recent experience) you could try a Premier Equine Winterbuster, which are much deeper, and in the sale at around £63.
I like Rambos too, but wasn't keen to spend all that money on an Exel one (if that's the one for larger horses), when she's only four and still growing.

Thanks the one Ive seen was black and coral but it said it had a zip too?
Premier Equine rugs wont go near him, shame really. Its odd as his fly rug is PE and fits great but I bought a turnout and it was tiny and wouldnt even fasten round his chest. Managed to get a travel fleece in a size up but I couldnt use it for anything else as he can barely put his head down.

I've got two detach-a-neck Weatherbeetas, in coral plaid (hhmmmm, quite bright even with a few weeks' mud on them but they were in Robinsons sale and I was desperate!) and am very happy with them. The neck covers fix on with velcro attachments which seem to be holding out fine. I was a bit surprised at quite how long the neck covers were but in fact although they seem to bag when the boys are standing with their heads up, when their heads are down grazing, the neck covers go right up to their ears, keeping them lovely and warm. They fit my boys fine - one is a MW 16.3hh TB in a 6'9" and one is a 17.1hh gangly WBxTB in a 7'0 - despite being quite different shaped animals. I find mine ok for depth, although the 7'0 wearer is still only 2, so it's possible it might not suit a broader/maturer horse in that size range.
