I own a pure thouroughbred who has a whetherbys racing passport he has never raced and his passport has no name on it, but I am going to hopefuly registerhim BE next year and his passport must have a name on it. Will whetherbys amend his passport or will I have to apply for a brand new one?

We had exactly the same. We informed WBs when we affiliated our boy. They didn't register his name... as such... but we wrote it on his passport. WBs stamped our passport as updated.. and BE accepted our name. So all is good. Hope same is for you.

Unfortunately though new rules for 2009 have just beeen revealed and their must be a name on the passport that ha sbeen written on my the passport issueing authority for all new registrations.

Hmmm... do you mean with WBs or BE. ??
Either way... it was a fairly simple proceedure (I think), to register a name with WBs... but the cost was around £ 100.. if I recall.... We didn't bother with that... as BE accepted our name and then WBs accepted the name after that. I don't suppose it is properly reg with WBs... but we have since been given the all clear with BD & BSJA with this name... so it does lead me to think there may be some sort of unilateral aaceptance. Of course, I may be completely wrong, in which case I am sorry to mis-lead you... but if you get a BE name... WBs seem to be accepting. Hope this helps.

You will have to send the passport back to weatherbys with a naming form, but if you ring them they will tell you what you have to do and what the form is you need. Their number is 01933 440077 and ask for names and passports. I am sorry to say it is quite a lot of money (i think about £100) to do it this way, but you passport will be amended the proper way for competing

And be thankful you dont have an existing completely awful name which you want to change, as Weatherbys charge something like £365 for that

Not that they would let me do it, as Bobble has point-to-pointed so they count that as racing

Forgot to say the name you pick has to be available with Weatherbys for them to register it. If you like, my husband has a Weatherbys account if you want to PM me the horses name you want, he can check if it available for you before you send off all the forms and they send them back to you as the name has already been taken.

Thanks very much for that but it does say in the rules that if the cost of compliance is relatively high they may dispense of this requirement but am no tusre what they regard as relatively high.

Haven't quite decided on a name yet as he's known as Rambo at home but he's nothing like it suggest, but will defintely ring Weatherbys on Monday. Thanks again.

I do know someone who evented their horse as 'Chestnut Filly' or whatever it says at the top of the passport of an un-named horse to save the hassle with Weatherby's....
