weaves???

[ QUOTE ]
Does anyone have a horse that just weaves at feed times, or do they weave when stressed.
Thanks

My TB mare used to weave on one livery yard as her stable faced the feed room door...at feed time only...it's a locomotory stereotypy, which roughly means that they do it when they want to go somewhere but are thwarted.

I think I had the worse weaver in the world, would do it while you held him on the end of a leadrope, across another horse back in a field and well just about anywhere at anytime.

I heard years ago that weaving can transfer to other horses...i.e if a horse regularly sees a weaver, they soon start to weave as well...any truth in this or is it a myth??

No, this has been discounted by various studies...there is no evidence that horses 'copy' stereotypies or any other behaviours (or we'd be able to train them much more easily

Where stereotypies are prevalent on a yard, they have been linked to management issues rather than copying.

Why do you ask?

Mine weaves but only if he's bored. He Doesn't seem to be effected by feed times but if I'm late to see him or if he's been stabled & left alone all day he weaves. It's not a massive weave, just a small, gentle rock & he does it in his stable not over the door.

My previous mare had always been stabled next to &/or opposite weavers/windsuckers & she never even thought about copying them. I know people moan about these vices but I've always thought that as long as they're not doing any harm to the horse & others around it they're not really that much of a problem.

Our WB only weaves when feeds are being dished up or 1st thing when waiting for hay. I have seen him weave in the field when the feeds are on the way!!

Doesn't do it any other time, not even when he's away competing and the others get their feeds! Strange chap!

Our mare does it only once you've collected her breakfast bowl and whilst it's being made - not other time - makes no difference if hay left in her net either.

On her old yard she was in alot more and not fed breakfast (1 meal per day in the evenings) and hay on the floor which she wolfed down within an hour and got no more - there she weaved even with a grill, just stood behind it and weaved to the point where she was lifting front feet with the swing.

We have her fed at 6am then straight out and she comes in 6pm every day with no days in and she's miles better - she is the stressy type though
